The cell is really only really a modified PowerPC chip with 8 cores. The fact that cell development has been discontinued does not mean Sony will have to move to a whole different architecture if and when they produce a PS4. They could use the latest PowerPC derivative (as long as IBM keep the power consumption and heat and cost under control). Which is pretty much the same basic architecture as in the XBOX360 and Wii.

The real difference in the cell was the way it used the multi cores as far as I can see - which has been improved upon in more modern processors anyway.

The much publicised difficulty in programming for optimal use of the cell is actually the industry-wide difficulty in optimising use of multi core processor chips in general - balancing the workload between all cores and not having one core doing all the computational tasks while other cores are unused.

You can't call a computer a PC if it doesn't use x86.

Welcome to MS's worst nightmare, a new architecture to its old and far surpassed x86 OS's. This is why MS got into gaming, to try and not let Sony into PC processors. The only thing that really blocks IBM/Sony processors is the OS (wich, surprisinly - sarcasm! - MS wont do, because it would make them spend tons of money).

Cell end up helping make the industry advance in the multi-core/CGPU way, but its life will end up being inside some supercomputers and Toshiba/Sony eletronics.

PS- Only one iteration of the CELLBE (the one IBM makes for supercomputers) had its development cancelled. For other appliances (PS3/4, Toshiba TVs) its still on, since there is a contract stipulanting it, so chill out about that.

You know that Andriod is an OS for small devices, right? Not desktops? Building an OS to run on the cell architecture effectively would require the OS to be rebuilt from pretty much the ground up. If it used any kind of virtual machine to run standard windows applications, they would run like garbage. A Cell-based PC with a new specially made google OS would cost a fortune, and reward it's users with super-expensive hardware that had virtually no software options. Congratulations, you've got Apple's old business model.

The Cell is only really suitable for environments where the work is predictable. It's not a suitable alternative for PC and would get absolutely killed in many tests against Intel and AMD's processors. This is the issue with PC processors, you need to be a jack of all trades, massive performance in some areas with flaws elsewhere means you're server fodder.

You are talking as if Android is gonna stay on small devices forever.It depends on Google for whichever device they want to make an OS for

Android is for phones and small devices. Chrome OS will be for computers.
