haha, if you said to me that the pictures of the burgers at the fast food joints were truly representative of the food you get at the drive through window you'd pretty much get the same answer that everyone knows that they are bullshots and the same applies to games. The pictures I see on the forums vs the pictures I see on my 53" Bravia are completely different.

On many games yes, on Uncharted 2, not at all.

Not on Uncharted 2? Somehow Uncharted 2 is different? People struggle to name developers who DONT release bullshots and not the other way around.

Yep. Sorry, keep reaching.

Blu-ray allows for uncompressed textures which helps. It's probably the reason Dragon Age ended up superior on the PS3

Not according to the Bioware forums... cough. Aparently they get crawling framerates in some battles especially when they try to use blizzards and that 4th level fire spell. Aparently even though the game looks better, it does not play as well. Pick your poison. Based on my years of experience in gaming, gameplay > graphics but some would disagree.

Heh, uncompressed textures like bmps or raws? I am pretty sure that no game uses uncompressed textures. That would be maybe most stupid thing I can think of when storaging textures. Uncompressed textures would clog up crappy download speed of blu-ray in no time.

Lol Feylic also...

I disagree...

While correct in saying that bluray can be used to store more detailed textures, it is rarely the case due to PS3s video card and PS3 memory. The RSX is not as good as the ATI chip in the 360. Also ps3 is stuck with 256 system and 256 video memory. 360 has 512 unified that can go both ways.

Whats the point of having more detailed textues on the disc when the PS3 can't load them in to memory and process it with the video card?

So no bluray does not = better graphics

however bluray does = manditory installs for some games and a 600 dollar system price tag at launch. It also lets you watch movies on disks that are similar to DVD'sin shape but output video in 1080p... :)

PS3 processor the CELL is a whole new technology. It is not like the traditional computer. In PS3,the graphics don't solely depend on the Graphic Card. The CELL's power makes up for the limited memory

lol Squilliam, you're confusing "reaching" with "reach-around"

OT:

all BR does is allow for capacity

and as with most things in life, it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it.

At least, that's what she said...

Guys when Hideo Kojima was developing MGS 4 he ran out of disc space on the blu ray disc. It was the first game to use the 50 GB blu ray. When released, it was the best looking game on any console. Same thing with UC2, they wanted more disc space.

It is apparent that the devlopers that are taking benefit of the blu ra capacity are producing the best looking games. I am certain that if the xbox had blu ray it would also be able to produce games with graphics as good as UC 2.

I'll wait here untill our site's expert comes to this thread... yes I'm talking about MikeB..

OK... My take.

Let's imagine the PS2 had a Blu-Ray drive, would that result into better graphics on the PS2? Well IMO, in general not really that much as DVD was a good fit for its SDTV targeted content. Only later PS2 games were using up full discs, probably some multi-disc exclusives would have seen fewer sacrifices to keep the game on as few as possible discs.

It would still have been beneficial though, for multi-disc games, being far more scratch resistant than DVD is also a definite pro and potentially there would have been far more capacity for including support for more languages, bonus content like 'making of' videos or games compilations.

With the HDTV era of console gaming, demands for more storage has gone up considerably. Before the XBox 360 launched it was reported from a developers event nearly all the XBox 360 developers there told a reporter they had issues fitting their games on 360 discs. There is a demand for more storage than DVD can provide regarding delivering higher quality textures and higher quality audio.

Unlike what some believe, the exclusive PS3 developers still make heavy use of compression as the Cell is able to decompress data faster than the Blu-Ray drive could read the larger data sets from disc.

The main benefits for the PS3 and I'll use Uncharted 2 in examples:

- More storage (allowing for higher quality assets/content including textures and audio and/or more varierty of this content, like in Uncharted 2 there are many very different yet very high quality environments and the game supports many different languages on a single disc as well).

- Scratch resistance

- Constant predictable streaming performance (this is how Uncharted 2 is able to work around memory limitations, streaming in more data when needed and is able to allow Uncharted 2 to stream data onto the harddrive to provide very seamless loading throughout the game without any needed game install, after initial bootup if you play this game you will not encounter much if any loading times while playing the game from start to finish in one go).

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

Now, I know Uncharted 2 had hours of dialog and FMV in game and extras, in HD.  For the life of me, I STILL don't know what the hell was going on with MGS4's programming.  It used 4 gig installs, load screens, and the game was pretty short.  The FMV's used the in game engine instead of pre-recorded video like Uncharted 2.  Great game but, what the hell, Konami?

It had a LOT of sound stored on disc and that sound was in 7.1 lossless format. Mainly it was the sound and you know like 5% or fewer people have the sound system to be able to tell the difference and of those half or fewer have the ears.

Why do these arguments start everyday? Don't you people get tired?
