Forums - PC Discussion - Windows 7 and gaming

Also CaseyDDR, you are kind of correct that under the hood Vista and Windows 7 are fairly similar but Windows 7 incorporates a ton of tweaks for greater efficiency and is also more capable of fully utilizing newer hardware and technological advancements due to these tweaks.

they should be similar considering, if I have my Windows NT versions correct, Vista is NT 6.0 and 7 is 6.1.

My processor doesn't support virtualization so I have to dual boot XP since older games have some issues (ex - colors are messed up in Age of Empires 2).

Another weird thing that's happening is that my frame rates are locked at my refresh rate, but v-sync is forced off. I'd update my driver, but apparently the screen stretch setting in the driver options is broken so if I don't want to constantly run in 1600x1200 and 60hertz just to be in full screen, I have to use a slightly older Nvidia driver.

What is the advantage of W7? It's not fucking Vista.

So after all the hype of this new OS, I finally installed it W7 Ultimate x64, and I don't really get the big deal. It's an uglier version of Vista, and don't see the advantages... What am I missing?

It's already been proven that Vista actually runs games better with higher FPS, why should I keep this OS and not go back to Vista Ultimate?

First off.....go to your personallization....you can make 7 look the exact same as vista as I have it now.

Second, personally going from vista to 7, i have to say you're crazy for thinking its slower as I got speed increases in every program especially games...

CURRENTLY PLAYING:  Warframe, Witcher 2

Well I do feel 7 does process programs faster than vista and that was quite obvious. But the bad thing is my desktop has 4GB of ram but it's only using 3.5GB. I think I can find ways to 'unlock' that 0.5GB of unusable ram but.... too lazy...

But gaming wise, I think vista is slightly better in terms of framerates (using FIFA10 as example)...

2-3 fps don't seem faster.

You need to use the 64-bit version of the OS, not the 32-bit one.

Correct. I'm not saying there will be an insane difference in performance but there will be a difference there. It's like the case with a lot of multiplat console games. It's normal the lead platform will have an edge but unless you put them side by side you won't see a whole lot of difference. Just that one will be smoother and will show slight performance benefits over the other.

Alright well I'll stick with 7 for now, I am going to tweak it however back to the Vista start bar.

The Halo francise is the most overrated bland game to ever hit the console market. It provides a bad name to all FPS that even showed effort at creating an original entertaining plot.

I probably have more ps3 games than you :/

I'm sorry but I don't take anything from somebody who's clearly proven to be bought out several times in their publishing history.

www.guru3d.com is who I've been following for years, along with other user-based test/modding sites. Yes they said they liked it, but with no performance increase there really is no reason for me to see why I should stay... Windows 7 (as I've been saying all along) is Vista with a different skin.

Why would Microsoft pay them to rag on one of their products in favor of another one of their products? I'm just hoping Win 7 is good, as opposed to Vista.
