For $100 cheaper than the GTX285 you can get an HD5850 which is 20-30% faster. For $100 cheaper than the GTX295 you can get the 5870 which is comparable or 5-10% less performing in some Nvidia sponsored games.

...

Did you say anything in response? Or was it just a quote of mine with the last few words cut off?

I'll stick with my 4850 until I see that game that seriously pushes the hardware. Starcarft 2 perhaps ?

This is the card I currently have. I have a 30" display, and like to play games at 2560x1600. With everything  turned up in Lord of The Rings online, I get 20 fps.I should expect more then 60 with the 5870.

I also have yet to get Dragon Age, or the latest CoD. I want more power before I experience those games.

Oh the upside I bought one yesterday for $399 at NewEgg. I found a tip online that worked for me! If you search there site, and get the listing, like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=hd+5870&x=0&y=0

you will see auto-notify on this page. This page can lag up to 45 minutes behind the actual page, so for the most current info, you need to click onto the item itself.

I did this for all of them, and the Diamond card was in stock. Grabbed one, and 15 min later is was sold out again.

Just a tip for the future :)

If I get one, I wanna get the Sapphire VaporX one. Cooler + slight overclock = win.

the 5870 and 5850 cards seem to be sellling faster than they can get to stores. often best to order one and get it the next time the shop gets a delivery, or you really need to camp the webpages and buy as soon as they switch to available.

You should have gone for the 5970 ^^

Tease.

lol. $600+ for a video card (if you can find one)... no thanks.

I am sure this one will be fast enough long enough, that I can sell it and buy something faster then the 5970, for the same total outgo in cost.

Like for example, if the 6870 is $400.. I could sell mine for $150, and the saving in energy over the 12 to 18 month difference, will make it the same price as the 5970, and all the while having a quieter, and cooler, box.

Your box should be pretty quiet as it is the Antec P182 (which I have as well btw). But yeah the HD 5xxx series is excellent and it pretty much bests the HD 4xxx series in every way. Im tempted but my target date for a new system is between April and Nov next year.
