Forums - Gaming Discussion - Does anyone feel like gaming has passed them by?

Sony have published Resistance, Resistance 2 and KillZone 2.

M$ have published Halo 3, Perfect Dark and Halo ODST.

Nintendo have published 0 FPS this gen.

So its safe to say that is just a 3rd party phase that will pass like every other genres. What bother me is that Sony is publishing more and more FPS then JRPGs this gen. I would like to see Sony go back to a diverse library.

I don't mind the huge amount of shooters as long as some of them do something new. Either a new gameplay mechanic, new unique story, just do something outside the box. I think a lot of people (including myself) like Modern Warfare 2 because it somewhat deterred from the typical WWII or save the world from aliens formula that many shooters have fallen into and has its own, unique story and atmosphere to it. Now if they make a Modern Warfare 9 (which I fear they will one day), then I start to take issue.

money talks.. buy other games.... stop buying FPS and they will make what makes them money.

Simple

shooters are the popular thing, but that doesn't mean you have to follow whats popular.
i do the same for music, i never listen to the radio, i never liked anything on the radio, i like not-so-popular stuff like Ayreon, Paradise Lost, Siouxsie and the banshees ....ect

Totally agree with Patapon and that list. My thing with gaming lately is I don't really enjoy going online with a console. I just don't get the fascination. I do enjoy an online multi with friends that I know only at times, but mostly I prefer the single player mode for some reason. The market though is headed full speed towards mutli and shooters. Yes as someone above said there are still tons of other games/genres, but the biggest money is starting to be thrown at the gun toting, sniper oriented, psycho crazy teen oriented games IMO.

Other genres are not big because they are dead, Shooters did not kill them, they killed themselfs.

No FPS did! Its called the magnet effect. When somthing gains attention. It takes away attention from other things. Than it gets worse and worse. Anyway I don't have this problem because I have a wii

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

@Killeryoshis

You cant blame FPS for the downfall of other genres, no one told them to make RPG 100+ hours of text and boring gameplay, platformers are so last gen, at least the same boring ones are, they need to freshen up, this gen has powerful hardware and there creating the same games as the ones on last gen platforms.

It's what sells...

The problem has become the cost of making games. Consider your favourite band. Fairly unpopular genres have bands that appeal to a small group and they can survive off of their small community of devoted fans. The difference between music and video games is the cost to make the product. It doesn't cost a lot to record an album.

Video games cost a huge amount of money. Games that appeal to a smaller community will have a much harder time getting funded. When a game does get made and doesn't sell well, then the next game in that genre will have a much harder time getting funding.

What it comes down to is if you like a type of game or a developer you should always buy it new and not trade it in after beating it. That's what I do.

Your partally true. FPS can weaken their strength. What kills them is if they fail too sell. Also did you just made fun of RPGs? People are going to attack you for that

At the OP, yes I feel the same. For me its that the most talented devs and largest staff create games that are following a trend that, as I get more mature, I don't really feel fits me anymore. Its very, very sad because I LOVE gaming so very much.

I honestly feel this will be my last console gen. Five years ago I never thought I would ever say that . . .
