Firstly - citation very much needed - that link you provided us is an attention seeking blogger, quite possibly yourself

1 million accounts =/= 1 million consoles

MS make a loss on the console in order to make a profit on accesories and games. A pirate who is buying a new 360 due to this event will not rebuy accesories, nor do they ever buy any games. Where does MS profit from this? (Besides the obvious motive of deterring people from buying a console and pirating on it)

btw the last time i checked i saw microsoft selling hardware at a profit like the xbox 360 and xbox 360 elite. :P

Was that before or after the recent $100 price cut on the elite??

I am fairly confident that MS make a loss on each console, and if they do make a profit, it is inconsequential when compared to software sales.

MS's goals in this are

Stop these particular pirates - some will now play more pirated games on another console, some will  rebuy a 360 and continue to pirate (this doesn't help MS though) and some will rebuy a 360 and genuinely buy games for it.

Deter other people from becoming pirates, giving people the same three options as above.

The goal of this is to sell software, not hardware

This happened to my friend, so we just went to wal-mart, bought a 360, put the defective console in the box and took the good console, and returned it like 20 minutes later.

I'm hoping most people will be doing that, unless your a sucker who pays for another Xbox

Yeah great idea.

Plus I can push over a cripple person, steal from the blind and punch a child on my way back from wal mart right? I guess its immoral but so is stealing so who cares right...

In the end the ban wave isn't going to stop people from modding their 360s or stop pirating. The mod scene will figure out how they are detecting the modded consoles and figure out a way around it before long, there will always be another exploit. For the time being I'm sure some people will buy new consoles, more will probably wait for the fix and simply play offline for awhile.

well they played with fire and got burned

It is just live, it's not like the consoles don't work at all anymore, they can still pirate games.

This will not force anyone to buy a new console; they were banned for violating the terms of use and pirating software. Punishing pirates is a good thing. The 600k number nor the pushing for a million has any credible source, but maybe we will hear something from MS in the near future about the bans.

I thought MS did this every year for the sole reason of selling more consoles.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

MS doesn't really make any money off of consoles, so forcing people to buy another one does not make MS money.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

My only concern is not for the person who were trying to use illegal copies of software. My concern is what happens when they sell them on through Ebay, after all they have already demonstrated they have few scruples so only a small step for them to sell them on to unsuspecting users.
