Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switching Games is too Time Consuming

Does anyone else hate how long it takes to switch out games these days? Back in the SNES days I could be playing one game, and then in a matter of 5 to ten seconds be playing another. Nowadays it can take minutes to take a game out of the disk slot, get another one in have it load up, and actually get into the game and play it. Even with the Gamecube I found it easier.

I find myself not playing as many games in a session as I used to, and leaving the same game in the system for weeks just because it's too much of a hassle to change it to play a game for fifteen minutes. It seems I need to play for an hour or more to make it worht the effort. The ratio of time spent changing games to time spent playing games is something like 1:10 when it should be more like 1:50. More and more I find myself playing downloadable titles because I can switch between them quickly, and even that seems to take longer than it should.

Let's go back to cartridges or something. Then you could change the games without waiting for the system to boot up. This game changing time increasing really ruins arcade style games. When I want to play a game I want to play it now, not 3 minutes from now.

What do you think?

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

Cut back on the whoppers and cheetos and you'll be fine.

If you can't play the same game for more than 15 minutes at a time I'd say it's not the game that has the problem, unless of course you're buying really, really shitty games....

lmao wtf? It takes 30 seconds at the most you lazy ****

Or he has ADD (which is probably the truth here).

Yeah lets lower the quality of the games, as long as they are more mobile...

I think he's talking more about load times, the actual ejecting and swapping of the disc is no different than old consoles, but now you have to let the game load, then you usual get 2 or 3 splash screens of developers/publishers that you can't skip, then you have to select load game/start game, then the game loads somemore... all in all it can take awhile. Myself personally I don't find it much of an issue, except for demon's souls which has like 1 billion developer/publisher names you have to watch every time you load the game! ahhh. at least the game itself makes up for it. :D

Well that makes more sense, but it's less funny...

But I know what you mean, I hate that monster load screen before LBP...

Yeah. I leave games in for a long time too. Jumping in and out of several games can be fun, but having to drop back into the menu, eject the game, then load the other game and wait for it to start up... Not worth it if I just want to fool around in a game for a little while.

Actually on Gamecube I loved Sonic Collection and Namco Museum just because I could jump between a lot of good games on those discs.

Not every game has to be played in long play sessions. Popping in Mario 64 and grabbing 5 or 6 stars in a quick 20 minute session can be very satisfying.

How about Twilight Princess, as an extreme example. Some of the best levels in that game are flying on the twilight bird thing up the river, and fighting the moblin hoards on horseback. Those are levels that it would be fun to be able to just jump in and replay at some point. But I never have. I know I can reaccess the flying level somehow, but it would take me 5+ minutes fooling around to figure out how. The level only takes 5 minutes, so what's the point?

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Hell YEAH!

I even get mad if a Game actually makes me push the Start button instead of just X! I have to move my thumb all the way to the middle of the Controller! What a drag!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
