Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony PS division has lost $4.7 Billion since launching PS3

@alanshearer

we can't just blame this mainly on yen fluctuation

the PS3 has been sold at a loss....but yeah your right losses increased after late 2008 becuase of the yen fluctuation, however thats when SCE was merged with VAIO & Walkman, so for allw e know PS3 isn't a big looser now

I hope people realize with these losses why there won't be a PS4 announced anytime soon. Or a 720 for that matter.

Irregardless of losses there wouldnt of been an announcement until 2011 at absolute earliest. The ps3's only 3 years old for christs sake.

Yes i agree about the ps3. But without the shock and awe event the ps3 would of been healthily profitable now even at $300.

Except the Vaio impact, the Gaming trend is clear - going up and next year will be probably already in black numbers

And at the end od 10 year lifecycle... )

P.S.: I don't have any Sony shares, however I like their products (not behaviour!) and if they are in profit, they continue in delivering great products!!!

IS this including the profit they have made from the PS2 and PsP from 2006 aswell?

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Perhaps not. If you look at the Sony report, they say PS2 and Vaio were responsible for the the operating loss. However, that's not the same thing as saying PS2 and Vaio lost money. We know that PS2 was profitable, but it fell short of earnings expectations. The same might be possible for Vaio. We don't have enough information to say for sure.

Specifically Sony's powerpoint says:

"Operating loss was recorded for the segment primarily due to a deterioration in Vaio PC and game business profitability"

In other words, there was a profit decline in those segments. However it does not say that those segments were causing losses.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

@grimes

ohhhhhhh ok

so we can't say "VAIO lost money" then?

So who lost so much money JUST the PS3....or is it R&D for the next VAIO/Walkma/PSP 2/PS4?
