Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is pointer FPS or motion control in general worth it right now?...

... Or the novelty suddenly fading? I think its the latter.

E3 2006:

And so the Wii revolutionized gaming with its motion and pointer controls.

core gamers especially Ninty hardcore fans:

WOOOOH! Motion controls! TAKE THAT, MS AND SONY! Now we can play swordfighting games realistically and we have accurate pointer FPS controls!

3 years later:

After numerous ports, spin offs, casual agmes and shovelwares.

Wii fans:

)':

Funny post asides, I really think motion controls isnt even the selling point of the Wii, its the casual fare of it. If you think that way, will you want Batman Arkham Asylum to have controls instead of button bashing to be waggle? Even the pointer controls even how much gamers praised it didnt work as exactly as it should. Not to mention you have to atleast have a distance for the pointer to work. Its not you can control the menus in the back of the TV. I've played numerous FPS on the Wii yeah the controls were good but after awhile the novelty wears off. its the same as other FPS in PCs and HD consoles only with different control scheme.

And now MS and SONY wants to steal the Nintendo's fanbase, by what? by makling their consoles as more casual than the Wii? Now that theres project Natal what gamers will think of it? If MS DID make a controller on the Natal with AGAIN, pointer controls then it ruins the point of Natal. Controller free gaming remember? And now because of SONY dont want to have a lawsuit by Nintendo they made a wiimote spin off without a nunchuck instead. And now you will play RE5 with the wand in one hand while the dualshock 3 in another. What a hassle...

So is it worth it?

Yes.

PS3 is getting pointer controls for RE5.. The Wii's IR pointer is the real innovation I think, even more than the motion control aspect, second only to the one handed Wii Remote design.

It's obvious that you're having trouble grasping the Wii and it's success or at least that's the impression I get from your recent threads. If you read Malstroms blog for example, you may find what you're looking for.

Which also means the Wii isnt intended for us wasnt it? And yet everyone here keeps denying the truth. Whats traditional games that need motion control the most I include RTS and FPS here.

If you want a FPS buy it on PC instead. FPS was worth on the PC anyway...

say that when the 2 motion control that made by SONY and MS released in 2010. If everyone here thinks Nintendo anadoned the core lets see what SONY and MS will in store. Wand had no ninchick for a reason other than the lawsuit

Motion control is very worth it, I couldn't go back to playing without it

What your problem is, is that you think that the pathetic third party efforts mean there is something wrong with Wii, when in fact its the third parties, Nintendo games are great

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Sony wand it's not necessary a pointer control which is the whole point of the ball at the end of the wand. It tracks without having to aim at the camera or a IR bar. So Sony isn't just copying the Wii but trying to improve hand tracking. Nintendo control has a separate camera for each controller and one tracking bar but just like trying to record on a camcorder it hard to keep a camera steady . Now Sony's wand is the exact opposite, like TrackIR, uses only one stationary camera yet, unlike TrackIR, can track more than one person at a time. Instead of tracking IR light it tracks different colors.
So Sony wand tracking is more like TrackIR (as a mouse sub) with motion controls than the Wii-mote.

What about Treyarch, they stood with the Wii fat and thin. Even Wii core gamers ignored them and even Treyarch admits there are flaws on the system. for one thing, the controls isnt as accurate as it used to be. its fast but its jerky. And for people here that thinks analog controls was bad compared to Wii controls you can change the turning speed and sensitivity of the controls.

And did I say PC? PC FPS?

What about The Conduit? It have worse controls than red Steel and COD 3. And the problem with those 2 games were only the turning.

I don't want to play an FPS on my PC.

For one thing I don't have a PC, I have a laptop.... it won't run anything newer than 2004ish, secondly I don't have a desk, and thus no mouse.

There is no question of what "traditional" games need motions controls, it's nothing to do with needs, for instance I found the general idea of sports games played with an old controller incredibly stupid, so prior to the Wii the only sports games I bought intentionally (I got 2 golf games with my 2nd hand Megadive because they were bundled with it) were racing games (which most wouldn't put with other sports games anyway). Now Wii Sports is one of my favourite games, and I bought Tiger '10... and I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed SSX Blur as much without the nunchuk steering/trick drawing.
