Forums - Sales Discussion - The Sales story behind PS3 and Xbox360

This is the sales story behind the PS3 and Xbox360. By the way this is my story of things.

When the PS3 was launched in November 2006, Xbox360 already had a 5.33 Millions units sales. But Xbox360 was still selling very good and build a lead of 7.10 Millions units  by November 2007. PS3 had sold 5.63 Millions PS3 and Xbox360 had sold 12.73 Millions units.

So Sony had no choice but to do a price drop and in November 2007 the PS3 was available at $400. PS3 sales was doing good and by September 2008 Xbox360 lead was cut  to 5.7  Millions units with a Total of PS3 14.75 Million units sold, and 20.45 Millions Xbox360 units.

So Microsoft immediately put a $200 Xbox available on the market. The results: before the launch of the PS3 slim on september 1st,  Xbox360 lead over PS3 got back up to 8.19 Millions with 23.44 Millions PS3 units sold and 31.63 Millions Xbox360 units sold.

Today with only 2 months and about 2 weeks after the slim launch, the lead was cut to 7.12 Millions units.

PS3 still has a lot of major games coming that will sure have a big impact on hardware sales : FF XIII, GT5, God of War 3.

XBox360 has Grand Theft Auto Episodes from liberty City and Forza 3. If those games don't push hardware and PS3 keep closing the gap, will we see the XBox Elite drop to $200

what was the point of this thread? am i missing something?

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!

^ I think its interesting... Its like a timeline!

What you should be stating is year data, not total data. PS3 outsold 360 it's first year by 1 million same year, and outsold it the next year as well. It was still outselling it last year as well till the 200$ pricecut.

I would like to see all the current consoles down to $99 USD by the time the next gen starts but i doubt that will happen.

Where is the angst the drama? I think the PS2 should bitch slapped the X-Box calling it fatty starting a generational feud. Mabye with enough explosions and car chases we can get a Hollywood deal. Of course we need a happy ending. The Wii teaches the HD twins how to make people look stupid playing awkward video games and be happy about it?
Obviously it's still a rough draft.

Go Team Venture! I still don't get the Wii, PS Move,  and Kinect.

No he shouldn't. He is showing the gap changes from price cut to price cut. That makes perfect sense. He wants to show how the price cuts have helped the sales of each console as they go back and forth. It would be interesting to see though how much a given price cut helps a given console for a given period of time and see which console benefits the most from a price cut and see if that can be used to determine who would benefit more from future price cuts or free SKU upgrades.

@OP I think the Slim has only been out 1 month and 2 weeks not 2 months and 2 weeks.

You are right RVDondaPC, the Slim has been out for 1 months and 2 weeks. Sorry my mistake guys and thanks for the correction.

sound thread. i think it's very interesting to see how the sales curves change year after year. they really tell the story of the public's relationship to the system.

take the wii, for instance. they just had a price cut, and they are barely seeing an impact. their sales are way down for this time of year. it appears that the public has come close to its saturation point.

the 360 is getting there as well, but with price cuts they are still clutching to the status quo. if they don't do something to light a spark in the public's eye they will start to lose ground fast.

the ps3 is the hot mistress at the moment. it's got sexy software and a new deal that is driving the public wild.

i remember the xbox fans saying how many units halo odst would sell, and then it sold around 20k units launch week. uncharted2 pushed twice that. this says a couple of things. one is that uncharted has established itself as a leading franchise on the console. the other is that casual gamers (people who haven't bought a ps3) are taking notice of superior software. it is unheard of for a non-established franchise to move so many units...especially when its first game was on that same console! you have to look the likes of halo, metal gear, and grand theft auto to see sales like that. this tells me that casual fans are being truly excited by sony's first party software. this means games like last guardian can also move units...if marketed properly. with this ability at their fingertips it appears sony is in the best position of the three going into the holiday season.

art is the excrement of culture

This would be so much cooler in picture/graph form.
