Forums - Sales Discussion - Dead Space Extraction is a MAJOR flop - we need to talk about it

A lot of people are saying the reason this isn't selling is due to the fact that it is "on-rails".

However, there has been decent success with on-rails shooters on the Wii. Ghost Squad was the first that sold half a million, and it was considerably shorter and more shallow than Extraction.

Then of course there was Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles which sold over 1 million, and then HOTD: Overkill which did pretty good at a half million.

So is it really the "on-rails" factor that's keeping this game from selling?

I'll add a big "no" to this. It's more of to do with Dead Space not being a big franchise, but even that can't explain these pathetically low numbers. I'm not buying that people are "tired of on rails shooters." Are 360 owners tired of FPSs? Are DS owners tired of RPGs? I don't think so! People can and do buy many games of the same genre, so that excuse makes no sense.

but how do you explain the failure of The Conduit? The game is hyped as AAA title by MANY MANY people here (Please, if you did, just admit it), and frankly, I can easily pull up many threads here with people predicting 2+ million LTD sales figure.

...

When I watched the trailer for The Conduit, I thought it seemed like an ok game, but when the title screen showed up, my interest dropped to zero, I thought the way they animated the logo was incredibly lame and the font is an aweful choice too, looked like a law firm tv show from the 80s. Art direction was uninspired.

Um...news flash- The Conduit was a success. This isn't for scruffybunny, but kingofwale. I don't care if it only sold 10 copies. If that is enough for a game to succeed, than so be it.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

People are blaming rail shooters more than wii fit here. Rail shooters is a great genre; it depends on the game that fits it such as The House of the Dead. If it wasnt known for being a rail shooter, then Overkill and 2 & 3 return wouldn't have sold decently. If Extraction had TV marketing then it could have potentially sold better. Thats where developers fail; they create a game, make trailers, but no tv ads. TV advertisements can go a long way for any product, not just on the web or magazines.

so RPG and FPS are just as big of genres as rail shooters?  You want to go ahead and calculate for me how many more FPS games 360 has sold over rail shooters?  How about how many more RPGs the SNES and PS1 sold over rail shooters.  It is really easy to get sick of rail shooters, it's a one trick pony no matter how good the game is.  You think people are gonna buy 4-5 rail shooters on the same system?  That's insane, for most people buying more than 1 is insane.  However it is common for people to own 5+ FPS on the same system.

You're failing to see my point. Those games at least sell fairly close to the same amount. Take a look at the sales of the other rail shooters compared to Dead Space. They aren't even close, and the reasoning "everyone is sick of rail shooters" isn't cutting it, because two of them have done fairly well, and this one isn't even near them.

It's a combination of being a rail shooter and being Dead Space. When it was announced, people were elated. When it was revealed to be on rails, interest died. Other rail shooters didn't have this problem, what this is is Dead Space lite and you can't sell an upstart franchise with a spinoff. House of the Dead is the on rails shooter franchise. Resident Evil is well established even on the Wii with RE4 selling over a million on just a port. Dead Space? Not so much.

If EA had put the original Dead Spce on the Wii and then tried to sell Extraction down the road, that would make a lot more sense. As far as it stands, I'm not sure who they're supposed to be selling this to. People that bought Dead Space on the other consoles? Clearly they weren't moved enough by the franchise to jump on the spinoff.

It's cute that they're threatening "re evaluation of wii support." There was no support, it was just a Dead Space spinoff that no one wanted. Even if this sold well, I guarantee you that the Wii wouldn't see Dead Space 2.

Or, more likely, they don't own a Wii.

1,5 million people bought Dead Space. Not even >9,000 of them own a Wii? This is ridiculous. They either snob the Wii and its graphics, or simply don't care about an on-rails spin-off.

It is interesting to see how this game had massive hype on the Internet, for months, it was in every Wii fan's top lists for upcoming must have core games.

But 9000! That's very low! Maybe the whole Internet gaming community is that small?

Also, how is it possible that no one made a joke about 9000...

OVER 9000!

Anyhow, why would a rail shooter do gangbusters on the Wii?
