Forums - Sales Discussion - Dead Space Extraction is a MAJOR flop - we need to talk about it

I guess I took the "Sony fans never really like taking responsibility for their own trolling" as a comment towards me, considering it was listed in a post, which was quoting me. But my statement was a little rude for something I normally post now.

The Zack & Wiki adding to a comparison is a poor one, which I agree. It's also odd but a lot of people (wii fans included) will place all "core" titles together. I don't see how Madworld and The Conduit have anything to do with each other other then being violent and made by Sega, yet people always seem to compare them as well in the big picture. I do think that people using Zack & Wiki need to update their comparisons with newer titles. I'll admit that I do combine genre's of games when I talk about them for the Wii too. Specifically in this thread, I think I pointed out that I bought A Boy & His Blob instead of Dead Space because I prefer the gameplay or something like that. It's just something that is done on here a lot.

As for the trolling, honestly, you do sometimes go off on fans for no real reason. There are Sony fans in here that posted dumb things, but the OP is a 360 owner, not a PS3 owners. So this whole thread was started by someone who doesn't even own a Sony console, yet you shifted blame at them. Don't get me wrong, a dumb statement is still dumb. But if the thread didn't exist, then there would be no reason for the dumb statement to exist in the first place.

Also, I agree that it's getting annoying with 3 dead space flopped threads on the front page.

I didn't call out the OP because he made a hit and run thread. It seems to be a trait in the MS camp. There isn't much point becase he's not coming back. The entire point was for him to set this thread up so others would turn it into a cesspool. He succeeded for the most part. It's the people using tired arguments from 2007 that needed to be shut down. They don't even care that the game in question is Dead Space. It's like they've got trolling in notepad and wait for another Wii game to 'bomb' so they can bust it out. I'm listening to a broken record. By this point they're not adding to any discussions and it's pretty obvious that they're using this game as a platform to rail against the Wii. Again.

But I've been so busy telling trolls to be quiet that I never gave my opinion on the subject. Quite frankly the failure of DS Extraction was simple to me: it's Dead Space. That's not supposed to be a dig at it, it's just that Dead Space is not a blockbuster franchise. You can't really get away with tossing scraps at another audience. I know the Wii detractors like to claim it's huge because it did 1.5m on both consoles, but it's not. This isn't a small company we're talking about, this is EA. They fart out Need for Speed games on a yearly basis and even just one version of those games sell similarly to the combined sales of DS. EA put a lot more time, money, and effort into this game than they usually do and it did not pay off. So to throw DS at the Wii audience which they shunned in the first was was a strange and perhaps even egregious.

Let's create a similar situation. Shaun White sold similarly to Dead Space (actually more when you combine all the versions). Let's say Ubisoft gets this ingenious idea. Let's make a new Shaun White game and make it exclusive to the PSP. But don't stop there! Instead of snowboarding, it'll be skateboarding! The PSP owners will love this.

Goes without saying how stupid that would be.

I just bought it, hope its good, as far as sales go, it dosent look to be doing to hot right now

They didn't have the balls to make it Dead Space 2. No pain, no gain.

I think it bombed because of the user base. They don't want it. Simple as that.

Same for Spyborgs.

Yeah, I'm still interested in the game but I'm not going to buy it first week. It's good but not too good to run to the store first day (still I'm planning to get it in the middle of November); Spyborgs is a different beast, the original concept was clever, take the saturday cartoons, add some crazy characters, some fishes singing in a sewer; brilliant. But then Capcom decided to listen the winhing of dozens of "fans" on the Internet and changed the concept to a gritty, dark generic brawler without personality.

I agree with what you say about Spyborgs. They should have stuck to the plan. Thing is, Capcom are known to listen to the crowd. Looks like it didn't work for them this time.

Sorry to go OT.

A lot of people are saying the reason this isn't selling is due to the fact that it is "on-rails".

However, there has been decent success with on-rails shooters on the Wii. Ghost Squad was the first that sold half a million, and it was considerably shorter and more shallow than Extraction.

Then of course there was Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles which sold over 1 million, and then HOTD: Overkill which did pretty good at a half million.

So is it really the "on-rails" factor that's keeping this game from selling?

What's inherently wrong with on rails games? House of the Dead is really good, even if Resident Evil was kind of boring...

I would certainly take House of the Dead games over 98% of the other games which essentially just star a man with a gun.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

ghost squad and house of the dead sold well cuz they are originally on rails shooters, nothing else, and they are cheap. resident evil umbrella chronicles sold well cuz of its brand name. it would of sold better if it wasnt on rails. ea try to emulate resident evil on rails success by bringing dead space to the wii. they forgot that dead space aint a brand name and the original ip on hd systems wasnt on rails. those two factors kill the game sales. even if it wasnt on rails, i think the game wouldnt have sold well to ea's expectations.
