Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

regarding cleaning disc: its one with brushes, but its specially designed for bluray drives -> brushes have a different length than normal dvd cleaning drives... so should be ok

regarding warranty: as it seems im only 10 months out of warranty, i thought i own my ps3 already one year longer, but that isnt possible as my version came out late 2007. Thx for the heads up.

@Mikeanheath: thats what i will do next! Thx. just have to buy a lens cleaning fluid.

Which cleaning disc is it,  when I called Sony Support about cleaning my PS3 blu-ray drive they said using a cleaning disc that has brushed will void the warranty, not really a problem for you since you dont have one.   But, The reason was because on a blu-ray drive the lens is closer to the disc then a standard DVD drive.   So the brushes can knock it out of alignment.  Thats why they have brushless cleaning discs now.  Which specifically say for the PS3

Here is th link:

Wow, thats new to me. But as my broken drive was the rason to get a cleaning disc, i doubt it was the disc which caused the problem. ;)

Im now off to get a cleaning fluid...

Gonna tell what has happened. Cheers

Thats great, I am glad your PS3 is working again

In the future don't play Blu-Ray movies on your PS3. A standalone Blu-Ray player can be bought for cheap these days anyway. Save your Blu-Ray drive for PS3 games only. This is the same sort of problem people had with their PS2. Using their PS2s to watch DVD movies instead of just getting a cheap standalone DVD player, which resulted in lots of people wearing out the PS2 laser and having to pay sony to replace the drive. I stopped using my PS2 to play DVDs after I heard about these issues. I use it strictly for gaming because of that. The same goes for Xbox 360, don't use it to play DVDs when standalone DVD players are so cheap.

Well to get a Blu-ray player to match tha capabilities of the PS3 you would need to shell out about $300-$350.  And thats not cheap.   Plus I have over 200 blu-ray movies and 67 blu-ray games,  and my PS3 drive is working fine.   So this is not an issue for the PS3

Just because you haven't run into any problems doesn't mean that the issue doesn't exist. That's like me saying disk read errors are not a common issue with the PS2 just because mine hasn't had any yet. Lots of people have had problems with their PS3's blu-ray drive to the point that there is a petiton out requesting that Sony extend the blu-ray drive warranty to 3 years. http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?PS3BRDW3 1080p blu-ray players can be bought for like $150. Maybe even less these days.

The biggest reason I plan on re-purchasing a PS3 is because of its Blu-Ray player.  I don't have a ton of money or much space left on my entertainment center.  So it would be a double loss if I had to purchase a PS3 and a stand alone Blu-Ray player.  It may suck if I had to replace the drive but I will have to take my chances.  Besides your out the money for the stand alone player anyway, you could just use that against the repair bill if you ever need it (doesn't make since to me).  Hopefully the newer ps3's have this problem less and less.
