Forums - General Discussion - To all you parents out there:

Alright I need some parenting advice:

So I got a DUI back in October of '08 and lost my license for a year. Then I moved back home and continued to drive for 9.6532 months. During that time, my parents went out of town, (keep in mind I wasn't paying rent, but paid all the fines and class fees that I had to for the DUI in addition to any costs associated with my car: gas, insurance etc.) and while they were out of town I threw a party and my dad walked in on it. He told me I had to leave by October 1. After he left I threw another party because I figured "what the hell, I'm leaving anyways" (yeah yeah, fucked up I know). In September, I got popped for driving on a suspended license and they towed my car for 30 days. Since it would've been next to impossible for me to move out when I was supposed to, my parents agreed to let me live at home while paying 400 a month in rent. While I didn't have a car my parents gave me rides to work (and sometimes back). And after the 30 days I paid the insanely expensive fees (1450 dollars) and my parents went with me to get the car back. Now they took the keys away and won't let me drive until I get my license back late next month. The car is registered to me and I pay for EVERYTHING on it. My question is, as a parent, do you see this as reasonable? I am 20 years old but I pay for everything that I use in this house. I wouldn't say I'm the best son, but I always do what they tell me, even if it's stupid.

Sounds reasonable to me. They've had to haul your ass around for a good long while, so I think they have every right to take your car away until you can legally drive so they don't have to do it for even longer.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

gah, I hate how reasonable Onyxmeth is.

THAT ISN'T WHAT WE WANTED TO HEAR

Shouldn't you not be driving anyway, until you get your license back?

Why shouldn't they? You're not allowed to drive it, whether you have the keys or not. You would think that after having to pay $1450 in fees you wouldn't even want to risk it, they are just doing what they believe is best. If anything they are doing you a favour. You obviously can't be trusted with the keys as you were driving whilst banned.

Oh and on a side note, I have very little respect for people who drive drunk, it's a stupid thing to do and I hope you have learnt your lesson and wont do it again. I had three friends that died in a drink driving accident once, not cool.

dude, if you were not living at home, and your parents were not driving you everywhere, then no, I would say they have no right. But they are doing a lot for you, you should be grateful they are keeping you from driving and incurring more fees, getting your car towed again, and trashing your driving record even more. they are trying to teach you to be responsible, which is obviously something they failed to do with you at a younger age.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

How is it stupid? I want specifics.

Because it endangers your own life and other people's...

Unless you're feeling suicidal and homicidal, then I don't see what rationale people would have for drinking and driving...

I hope this was sarcasm.

12,945 American people died from drink driving in 2005 and many many more were left with severe life altering injuries. Only stupid people drink and drive. It's a good way to kill yourself and those around you.

Well it isn't like people drive drunk because it is fun or for the sake of doing it... Would you consider somebody who had a beer or two with their dinner a danger?
