I am curious about our numbers for PS2 in Japan. They seem to be heavily overtracked if you compare it with numbers from the saletrackers in Japan. Media Create and Famitsu both have it at around 21,6- 21,7 million lifetime. VG Chartz has it at almost 23 million lifetime. That´s 1,3- 1,4 in difference between our numbers and the japanse trackers. Usually VG chartz numbers are similar to that of the trackers but the PS2 numbers are a big exception. Anybody know the reasons for this? Here are info about sales from GAF:

 A report issued by Famitsu publishers and all-round industry analyst types Enterbrain has given us the lifetime sales figures for the current generation of Japanese consoles.

Below are Famitsu according to Kotaku. The total figures are:

PS2: 21,454,325
DS Lite: 17,080,747
PSP: 10,181,888
Wii: 6,826,612
DS: 6,449,206
PS3: 2,369,484
Xbox 360: 748,992

Numbers are dated October 2008 and PS2 was at 21,45k back then. PS2 has sold 281k according to us since that date so add that to the Famitsu numbers and you have a total at around 21,7 million.
 
So to sum it up, PS2 lifetime sales:
VG chartz       23 million
Media Create 21,6
Famitsu          21,7
Difference      1,3-1,4 million

Yes but if you add what PS2 has sold since then (280k) you get 21,7 million. And Media Create still has it at 21,6 lifetime today. I really think a difference in 1,4 million is a big amount. Nobody knows anything about why there is this difference in tracking? Media Create and Famitsu both agree on a much lower number than ours are.

Through March 2007 Sony had shipped 25.42m PS2s to Japan*.

Good to know but this includes like you said shipments to other countries. I still find it very strange that both Famitsu and Media Create agree on the much lower number of 21,6-7 lifetime hardware sold for Japan.

Those MC/Famitsu figures have some gaps, that is the maiin reason for the discrepency. Also, the biztap link is to production shipments. Retail shipments are not the same as production shipments. Compare PS2/PSP/PS3 production shipments to retail shipments when both figures are available in the March 2007 year and the figures are millions of units apart. This is why when Sony gives retail shipments for PS2 it is never just the figures on the production shipment page + retail shipment page - that would be counting some units twice. PS2 production shipments + retail shipments are 141m, but Sony had retail shipments of PS2 at 138.9m through June 2009
