Forums - Microsoft Discussion - AMD in the new XBOX for 2012 ?

I'm suprised nobody posted this rumor yet (I can't see it on the forum) :

http://www.next-gen.biz/news/has-amd-already-won-next-gen-xbox-deal

California-based semiconductor firm Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has reportedly secured a deal to create the graphics processor for Microsoft’s next Xbox.

Tech site Fudzilla claims that the platform holder was happy with the Xbox 360's ATI-built Xenos GPU and keen to partner with the firm again for its next console. AMD merged with ATI Technologies in 2006 in a $5.4 billion deal.

The site also suggests that Microsoft initially intended to “refresh” the Xbox platform in 2010, but has now pushed the plan back to 2012. ATI’s new GPU will reportedly allow for Xbox 360 software backwards compatibility.

Graphics chip firm Nvidia has also reportedly won a contract to provide technology for a new Nintendo handheld.

Sounds good, if true. It's also in-line with my prediction that the next gen will begin around 2012.

Indeed, the original article is better :

Game over

We've learned
from industry sources that AMD / ATI has already won the GPU deal for the next generation XboX console. It looks like Microsoft was happy with first Xeons GPU and it wants to continue using the same, especially since the new ATI GPU should keep the compatibility with legacy games.

The consoles refresh was supposed to happen in 2010 but due to the recession both Microsoft and Sony have decided to push its plans for 2012 and keep the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 alive for more than it was originally planned.

We don’t know how the GPU looks like but judging from the timeline when it is supposed to be delivered we suspect that it might be a 28nm part.

yes it actually has been posted. but i think its probably correct. M$ and ATI have had a great relationship with the 360 and i wouldnt be surprised to see them award the next contract to ATI for that reason alone.

I mostly play RTS and Moba style games now adays as well as ALOT of benchmarking. I do play other games however such as the witcher 3 and Crysis 3, and recently Ashes of the Singularity. I love gaming on the cutting edge and refuse to accept any compromises. Proud member of the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race. Long Live SHIO!!!!
