Forums - Gaming Discussion - It is time for Shigeru Miyamoto to retire (Malstrom)

Look just admit you committed a faux pas in forgetting that Gunpei Yokoi's career was ended by a tragic car accident and that you made an unwitting allusion to it, then we can all be on our way.

OK, I know what this is about it's the "window seat" thing. This is a complete misunderstanding. When Gunpei Yokoi's Virtual Boy failed Nintedo gave him a "window-seat" job where he could not make anymore decisions and they basically ignored him. It's some sort of japanese tradition I think.

Yes. And it's a car allusion, which is not appropriate for Mr. Yokoi. He was not given a lesser position - he resigned after the failure of the Virtual Boy.

Again: you made an unwitting allusion to his untimely death, which drew parallels with a possible untimely death of Mr. Miyamoto. This is an immense faux pas. Just say you made the mistake and I guarantee that you will be left alone.

Edit: He was actually in the passenger's seat that day, which makes the allusion even worse.

I like Malstrom. He is on the money with a lot of what he says.

He has a proven track record which is why I don't just take what he says with a grain of salt. But even in things I don't agree with I can see the points he raises and they are usually well observed. Especially on the business side of things. I also think his criticisms of the game industry and UGC are well founded.

Anyone who thought he was just a Nintendo defender fanboy must not have been paying attention. I agree with Liquid, that people turning on him now are disgruntled Nintendo Die hards. But hell, even I don't agree with EVERYTHING he says. He's a wonderful alternative to the bs game journalists from IGN to Gamespot, at least in my opinion.

As far as this particular article..There are good points raised. I also think he may be using spectacular words choosing to shock the reader as to illustrate just how against UGC he is. And I agree. I don't buy a game to make the game..I love Smash Bros Brawl, but I've never used the level creator in that game. I buy a game to experience the content created by the professionals.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

No look:

"Sadly after this incident Yokoi was sort of demoted at Nintendo orwhat Japan called "Getting a window seat" and he eventually left the company..." link

Also they talk about it in G4 icons.

I was not making any sort of allusion to Gunpei's death it's just a complete misunderstanding.

I said "unwitting". That is still a faux pas.

Yes, I did make a social blunder. I didn't even know people would read it like that. I assumed people would've known what "Getting a window seat" means in Japanese business. It took me awhile to know what everyones problem was. For starters, it doesn't t even really make sense in the context everyone took it in. Still, I want everyone to know that I wasn't alluding to Gunpei's death at all.

See? Just that easy, and problem solved.

Anyway, Nintendo makes way, way, WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much money off of Miyamoto to bench him. Wii Sports and Wii Fit alone.

"the window seat" IS a sort of Japanese tradition. It was used extensively in the past, and is still kind of used today, but much less extensively. The meaning of the window seat is dual. First, Japanese groups tend to work in teams. These teams generally face or abut each other. A window seat, symbolically, is seated next to the outside world, because he belongs with them, rather than the company.
Secondly (and this is the real horror), is that the window seat is a very very subtle yet clearly implicated directive to jump out the window.

@Cheebee

I feel I should apologize to you for how I was defending myself earlier.

I'm sorry and I take back what I said earlier about you being mad at me for not hero worshiping Miyamoto. If I wasn't busy defending myself I would've probably noticed what you were talking about earlier instead of waiting for Khuutra to tell me.

I agree with what he said on UGC, I don't agree with his comment on Miyamoto retiring, but I do think Miyamoto is being foolish in even entertaining the idea of UGC being viable.
