Malstrom's "motivation for the site" is not what he says. His ASPIRATIONS are to learn about business so he can start his own and be rich. But he clearly is not motivated to do that.
He has been "wrapping up the site" for months and months (years?), with no new articles, just tons of blog posts. He does not connect the dots from the games industry, or the newspaper industry or anything else he mentions, to a business he could potentially start himself, and frankly he would not necesarily learn how to START a business by studying a 100-year established titan like Nintendo. And what do 30+ posts about game music have to do with his claimed motivations?
In reality, he clearly has a lot of motivation to follow the games industry obsessively, and write about it obsessively, and advocate for non-gamers or new gamers who he identifies with, and see if he can get a reaction from people. He's basically a forum-dweller, except he has leveraged his well-earned reputation from predicting Wii's success to create this no-feedback-except-by-email blog where he can totally control the conversation.
He is very intelligent, and often very insightful, and brings up points no one else does, and if he didn't, he wouldn't get so much attention. I would honestly say he is one of the top 10 voices to listen to or blogs to follow in all of gaming; no one else will shout "death to the industry" as loud as they can. But he does not make sense only as "guy who wants to learn about business"; he is also "guy who loves to read his own writing and get a reaction from people."
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
