Forums - Gaming Discussion - It is time for Shigeru Miyamoto to retire (Malstrom)

Flipnote Studio is the only thing that attracts me to upgrading to a DSi. It's not enough on its own but I'm sure that will change over time.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Let´s say I agree... Who will replace him?

Miyamoto = one of the greatest creative artists who has ever lived. I'm serious. Who knows what amazing games we might never get to see if he were to retire today like Maelstrom says he "should".

Miyamoto is responsible for arguably the biggest success in gaming UGC, Miis.
Mario Paint, whilst not a huge seller, is still fondly remembered and still used today.

If UGC games are the next big thing then Miyamoto is probably going to be the one who nails it. Sales of 3M+ for a UGC experiment are nothing to scoff at.

The only UGC games I can see myself buying are a new Mario Paint with tons of Nintendo assets to play with or a level creator for 2D Mario.

I will get ModNationRacers.

If Miyamoto scores a new Mario Paint, that will be incredible, i still have the old one on my SNES.

Even if some of his points on UGC are valid, saying Miyamoto should retire is just...wrong.

Can somebody who has read most of Malstrom's articles tell me what his objective are? What does he want to happen, what's his "vision"? I know he's an enemy to the industry and wants it to collapse. But is he standing up for a better world of gaming, or is he just another angry videogamer who thinks his opinion should be law...

@rol
Thanks for the explanation.

"When all is said and done, I think Miyamoto will be remembered for Wii Fit more than Mario and Zelda. While Mario and Zelda were revolutionary, Wii Fit is far more so. This likely doesn’t make sense today, but you will see. Making video games as a tool to help one’s health will likely be remembered as the most revolutionary game in the last twenty years. That game is going to spawn a new sister industry next to the game industry."

^^Malstrom said that in June of this year. Somebody should ask him why the guy most responsible for "the most revolutionary game in the last twenty years" should now retire 2 years after it was completed. Just because Wii Music helped destroy Wii momentum, and Miyamoto still believes in a future for UGC?

What did Malstrom say about Wii Music before it was released, anyways?

"After a history of successes that stretch before most gamers were born, it fascinates me that gamers still think they know more about making games than Shigeru Miyamoto.

...

Whether Wii Music is a success in sales or not does not dispute the fact that the game is a work of genius. It is reflecting something no game has before.

The hardcore will not like this conclusion, but truth must be told or else we become guilty of self-censure: Wii Music is the closest video game ever to become ‘art’. History will judge Wii Music favorably even if the historians don’t."

Ah. So Wii Music is the greatest work of artistic genius in the history of videogames regardless of how well it sells or what "historians" say in the future. And furthermore, gamers should not think they know better than Miyamoto.

Now excuse me, Malstrom has new content up I must read.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

Malstrom has noticed that Nintendo has been less focused on creating new content lately and I believe he sees them going more and more into that direction. He thinks that it will eventually destroy them. He doesn't want what happened to Atari to happen to Nintendo because a lot of talent and never came back or something like that.

Ever hear people say "Nintendo needs to make new IPs" that because they've been mostly making the games with the same characters for a long time now. I don't know if this is Miyamoto's doing but Malstrom thinks so from all the interviews he's been quoting. His recent Joystiq interview talking about pursuing User Generated Content seems to point that way.

The reason it seems wrong to gamers for Miyamoto to retire has to do with all the idol worship he gets from them. They are willing to overlook or ignore any mistakes he makes and has made because most gamers now has grown up with one of his games.
