Forums - Sales Discussion - Japanese Retail Employee Says Xbox 360 Having Rough Time

This is rather obvious

I'd say if 360 sells 3-4 million units lifetime in Japan that's a success.

If it keeps selling like in 2009 then it would take 6-7 years to reach 3M units.

Not sure that guy believes in serve with a smile.

Well, it's one opinion, but really, is it a surprise?

360, in four years (more or less, 360 launched December 2005 Japan, right?) has racked up just over 1M units with the help of a lot of marketing dollars, exclusive (or timed exclusive) titles, etc. and what I think can be fairly deemed a massive and strong effort by MS.

The PS3, despite launching with a horrible price, few games and the loss of many titles to 360 as part of the aforementioned timed exclusives, has sold over 3.5 Million consoles in less time on the market, and with a recent huge boost thanks to the Slim and a price cut.

The Wii... well, you know.

Of course the 360's overall outlook isn't rosy, and with the regional backlash with ToV on PS3, etc. I think the console clearly took a public relations knock.

Of all the consoles in the region its the most likely to struggle to see growth until Natal launches. Not saying Natal will save 360 but it's the next thing on the horizon that could improve the console in Japan that I can see.

So, while I kind of discount a one guy opinion, in this case I reckon he's probably right, but then, he is speaking about something fairly black and white.

just a hypothetical but,...wouldn't be kind of ironic if MS puts all of this effort into reinventing their console with natal and by the time natal arrives the 360 has already been taken off the shelves (in japan).

Taken off the shelves by eager customers, you mean!

Eager customers who may not make it home alive with their prize as other customers set upon those lucky enough to get their hands on one!

Such is the life of the JRPG King!

It's a shame really, the Japanese market stick to their home territory consoles, and games, they don't really expand like we do in USA, we're fanatics about JRPG's as much as WRPG's, and so on, but it doesn't seem to be the case in Japan. With huge releases such as Final Fantasy 13 only being released on PS3 in Japan, it doesn't help make X360 worthy of a purchase there.

Alkamist, I´m not so sure many American gamers are 'fanatics' about JRPGs as much as WRPGs nowadays (maybe with the exception of Final Fantasy).

Here in the U.S....WRPGs have clearly taken the spotlight this gen, with titles like Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, etc....in the last gen, WRPGs were starting to get more noticed due to them starting to show up on a home console (the original Xbox), and not only on the PC, but this gen they´re really coming out with a bang.

the guy in the pic looks like he's embarrassed to be taken a pic in front of those Xbox360 lol

Meh, 360 has done well enough over there, it could never set japan on fire. I don't think Natal will do much for Japan either ...

Quite surprising the 360 isnt doing well. I always thought it is the best selling system in Japan.
