Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sega DETERMINED to “CRACK core gaming” on Wii -- Madworld sold well enough!

Sega determined to “crack core gaming”
BY Rain Anderson Oct. 12th, 2009 More on:John ClarkSEGA

They’ve said it before and they’re saying it again; Sega wants to find the Wii’s core gamer market.

In an interview with gi.biz, Sega UK’s managing director John Clark has reiterated the company’s plans to crack the core gaming code and said that Sega is “prepared to have a go and try to be innovative.”

Even though widespread success it yet to come, one clearly mature title, the Platinum Games-developed MadWorld, Clark says, sold well enough to put Sega in a place where they’re “prepared to invest in high quality, new IP.”

“… there must be a way to release mature, more adult content on the Wii format.”

Your talking about SEGA then can do anything...and if you disagree you will have a rabid SEGA fanboy on your hands...

Former something....

I think they can, but I'm not sure if they will. They need to make something that really is a high-quality and high-budget project - Don't get me wrong, I think MadWorld was a pretty good game, but I severely doubt it had very high production values, and given it's sales, it's probably a good thing it didn't.

They need to think outside the box, do something that Nintendo aren't doing but will still be appreciated by Nintendo's core fanbase. I think this is a problem that The Conduit had, it was a competent FPS and a good game, but it didn't light up the charts because it just wasn't anything really special. Their biggest selling point was that they were using a special graphics engine, and odds are, if you bought the Wii, graphics are pretty low on your priority list. I own the Wii and I love the Wii and I know graphics aren't very high on my priority list.

I strongly believe that Sega can do this if they put all the pieces in the right places. I just hope they actually will do it.

Sega have been really good this gen.

If anyone can do it, it's them.

Man Segas on a roll, they've been fully suppoting wii for a long time. I hope they make a sequel or new IPs.

My advice, make a great overall package. Don't focus solely on good graphics, artstyle, or humour. Give us something that's actually worth $50.

Pixel Art can be fun.

Applause from me on their efforts and toward their continued efforts in Wii development.

Them, or Ubisoft or EA or Activision/Blizzard... they are all powerfull and talented companies. M rated hardcore games can sell well enough on the WIi NMH, RE, HotD are all proof for this...

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

Can Sega release mature games on the Wii that'll sell enough to make a good profit? Yes, they already have, and will continue to do that.

Can Sega release mature games on the Wii that'll sell well enough to appease internet forum posters or gaming journalists? No, they can't.

They need to bring some of the unique and fresh ideas that they had on the dreamcast to the wii..... they need to invent some new IPs that capture imaginations or utilize the wii's controls in interesting and fun ways

Bringing sequels to old IPs like jet grind radio, seaman, and panzer dragoon would be a good way to take a crack at the "core" too.

I have no more heros, house of the dead, muramasa and the conduit which are considered "core titles" but none of these did very well on the wii. We have to understand that this "core" gamer demographic is a limited group of people; sony and microsoft are already fighting over this small group, while nintendo is going in a very different direction. yes the 10 million people that bought Halo 3 doesn't seem like a small group of people...until you compare it with the population of the world.

That is what nintendo is doing; they want the world, and they want everyone to try video games. Nintendo is trying appeal to everyone, but is mostly focusing on expanding the market. To pull in the core audience, who are not on board with the console, they will have to rely on Sega; but this will take time. We have to remember that sega is also starting over with a fresh group of people that maybe have never played a video game before the wii; it will take time for their tastes to mature.

they can do it! just give them some time! GO SEGA!
