Faxanadu is great.

If you mean VC game, then I would assume some of the all time classics like Super mario Bros. 1-3, Zelda 1-2, Kid Icarus or Star Tropics should work.

If you expected SMB2 to be a classic SMB game, then I understand your disappointment.

SMB3 is definitely the classic approach and easily the best SMB game on NES.

Yeah, the Mario Bros. games are great, and if you're gonna pick one of those, definitely go for 3. It's great.
Also, Zelda! The 1st one that is, not the 2nd (Adventure of Link). Classic.
Kid Icarus is okay, but not terribly great. I'd pick Metroid over it. Metroid's awesome.
Punch-Out!! is a great title if you want a pick-up-and-play game.
Finally, Kirby's Adventure. A great, upbeat happy title. Not too difficult, but very good. :)

Kirby's Adventure is definitely the best NES game.

NOOOO! NO SMB3!

Kirby's Adventure.

Kimi wa ne tashika ni ano toki watashi no soba ni ita

Sugu yoko de waratteita

Nakushitemo torimodosu kimi wo

I will never leave you

SMB3

If you don't get it you're a nazi.

I think the real standout titles for nes have already been mentioned, and I would definately either go with super mario 3 or the legend of zelda; those are the best games with the most replay value. I don't think anyone else cited donkey kong, which is an arcade classic.

another ground breaking title you could check out is final fantasy (just released!) if you're into turn based rpgs
