Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 will almost certainly beat 360

your reasoning makes no sense but the PS3 selling more in Japan and Europe even though having a year less in Japan and 18 months less in Europe is quite impressive, taking the high price point in account its amazing.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

this happens every time the ps3 gets the momentum. Someone goes spouting off, haha.

Well my friend, let's hope you don't go eating your words come christmas time.

you obviously missed all the sony is doomed threads lately... because i havent seen you posting anything in those talking about how those always pop up when 360 fans become insecure

If I remember right the majority of PS3 doom threads were started by Sony fans.

Beat it into the dustbin of history?

Even if we were to accep last week's numbers as representative of a new baseline, with the PS3 selling ~60 000 more units per week than the Xbox 360, it's going to take nearly two and a half years for the PS3 to catch the 360.

And we have to assume that in that time Microsoft is going to sit there twiddling it's thumbs, idly watching it's market share disappear.

I hate it when people bring up that statistic...the PS3 would take 2.5 years to catch up if and only if there weren't a thing called holidays! When you take that into account, plus the boosts that software gives, that 2.5 years can be reduced by a lot!

I gave the PS3 the benefit of a 60 000 per week advantage and assumed that Microsoft would do nothing in the intervening  years. Change either of those and that 2.5 years could be increased by alot.

The statistic was not intended to show a best case scenario, but by no means is it a worst case scenario either.

Therefore to state that the PS3 will almost certainly beat the 360, is premature.

You wanting it won't make it happen. Things will switch up again when 360 price gets cut below $199 + Natal. Its up to Sony to respond again after that.

you shouldnt have even said a think, your name is enough LOL

I agree entirely. It's impossible to make any kind of reliable prediction about what might happen now, so soon after the release of the slim and leading into Christmas.

The purpose of my post was purely to highlight what kind of numbers the PS3 would have to do on average to catch the 360, not to say that it would or to predict when it might happen.  I've seen it before where people have made threads like this, paying heed only to momentum and little attention to the not insignificant gap that still exists between the two systems.

It already has in Japan and is about to in Europe. Quite impressive, considering 360 had a one-year headstart.

For PAL regions, a 1 year and 5 months headstart (the 360 had 2 extra holiday seasons there). I think the PS3 is already ahead in PAL regions as a whole. Asia was not a contest, the United States will be where the real battle lies. This holiday season we should see a turnaround with increasing Blu-Ray movie demand and cheaper slim PS3, but I think holiday season 2010 will probably have a greater impact on restoring the balance and greatly diminish the 1 year headstart advantage there.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."
