Forums - Sony Discussion - Advice needed please concerning PS3 repair

My UK 60GB launch model got the yellow light of death this morning. Sony are refusing to fix it and are only offering the same model again for £128 and a 3 month warranty.

I think this is a dreadful option as I have no confidence the same thing will not happen again.

Are there any other options for repair?

Thanks

Yes, but I don't know any off the top of my head. Try Googling it. And if anybody tells you to throw it in the oven, or wrap it in a wet towel, or short something out DON'T that is a sure bet the issue will pop up again, and perhaps be unfixable next time around. It may be as simple as the "x" clamp fix.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

Chuck the hunk of crap and get a reliable machine like the xbox 360.

Make sure to get an earlier build too!

All you can do is be persistent and try and get them to repair it for free. Some people have got free repairs by speaking to a supervisor and saying they think it's unacceptable that a console costing £400 (or whatever it was at launch) should die so soon after purchase. In some cases though, Sony don't back down so you have little choice but to pay up.

Go with Wessle's plan, it's rock solid!

Too bad. Not the best time for this to happen. My 60gig B/C PS3 is still doing well and it’s over 2 yrs old now. Vacuuming it once in a while does the trick. Try the advice above and complain to a supervisor at the customer services.

Thanks for the replies.

Sony are not budging so I'll scrap it I think. Would need to get the warranty with a refurbished one so for one year that would bring it up to £188. Was going to get uncharted 2 so might go for the 250gb option with uncharted on play.com for £269 and put it down to bad luck. Took really good care of the machine and dusted it regularly. Wasn't even on for that long - 30 mins maybe. No technical issues before and it was very quiet.

Does anyone know if the old 60gb hard drive would fit into a slim to retrieve saved files. Also I was playing infamous at the time. Is there any way of rescuing the disk from the broken machine?

Thanks again.

Unless you backed up your saves, you're screwed. If you insert the hard drive into another PS3, you'll just be prompted to format it.

There's some info here that may help you: -
