Forums - Sony Discussion - 2009: PS2's last Xmas?

i think sony needs to put the ps2 to rest, because it hardly has any games coming out for it and no more blockbusters either. i think sony should drop the ps2 to $99 around black friday and sell its remaining stock and focus on just the ps3/psp/psp-go systems. :)

It's been $99 for a while already, hasn't it? o_o

I think it will see Christmas 2010 as well.

SONY will continue to sell PS2, there trying to stop Wii from takin its crown

probaly 2011

It's sales will be completely irrelevent in 2010. (whats it doing now..no more than 40k, 50k a week?). Plus with lower prices all around form the current gen consoles, it's more appealing to get one of those than a PS2. I wouldn't be surprised if half the current PS2 weekly sales are from rebuyers.

2010 it will probably plummet below 30k a week worldwide and dwindle to nothing in 2011.

Why would you discontinue it if still profits?

Either major retailers would either ask it to be discontinued/stop ordering more or people would have to stop buying them.

If you recall years ago the PSOne was selling for $50 and still selling a few units here and there. I picked one up myself almost.

If the PS2 were to drop to $50 it could sell even more, hell I'd probably buy a backup myself and keep it aside incase my PS2 were to crap out. I know when the Gamecube dropped to $50 I picked up a spare.

It's just that simple.

games still sell on the ps2. Madden sells wel on the ps2. as long as compnies make games, it'll keep on selling.

Discontinue and rereleased rebuild version of PS2 games with trophy support on PSN imo ( like they are doing for GoW except it isn't a digital release).

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Its doing around 200k a month, thats at least over 2 mil a year. Its still too early to drop it if its still making profit. If its true that the PS3 is still losing money on hardware, than at least the PS2 will help it break even for now.
Not sure how it'll do in 2010, but if its still doing ok, why drop it? unless it drops to like 20k a week consistantly, then yeah, might be a good time to just kill it. But I think its selling very well considering an arcade 360 doesn't cost that much more.
And even if half the people buying it are rebuyers, Sony wouldn't care, it's numbers are still taken, and esp the profit made from it.

Well there wont be a next gen until Sony drops it,Thats a fact.

There's a problem with your statement.

1). The PS2 is already a $99

2). It still gains profit. Sony makes a considerable amount of its revenue from the Playstation brand, particularly, the PS2 because of its library and profit, unlike the Xbox, which, although is a success on Microsoft's part, it generates a small portion in comparison to other divisions of the company.

3). It still sells decently for an 8 year old console. (It even surpassed the PS3 one time in weekly sales)

4). Many people own PS2 to complement their PS3 (BC is one)

5). Cheap to produce meaning that it will never really hurt them in the first place.

6). ALOT of people own a PS2. People still buy games for PS2. Game sites still review PS2 games. It isn't dying, if I were to metaphorically give it an age, I'd say 35-40 years old. Getting old, but still kicking and lots of potential.

This is the true definition of owning.
