Forums - Gaming Discussion - Metacritic is biased

http://www.notaboutgames.com/home/2009/09/metacritic-math.html

I’ve just found a very strange thing about the metacritic score and how the final numbers are rounded. Take a look at Halo3:ODST and Uncharted 2 and how they are treated differently.

HALO 3 ODST
Total score 5169 in 62 reviews= 83,3
The final score is rounded UP to 84

UNCHARTED 2
Total 2046 in 21 reviews=97,4
The final score this time is rounded DOWN to 97

wtf?

lol. How can we be sure he calculated right though... He might be biased himself.

We have a winner:

Nonsense.

There's a page on Metacritic linked from everywhere in their site, explaining that the overall score is a weighted average. We don't know the weights they're using on each source, so we can't replicate their calculation.

I don't give that much importance to the Metacritic average, but at least people should learn to read.

Well, they should both be rounded down. I'm not sure why they rounded odst up.

That's why Game rankings is betetr since they use decimal points to make things more accurate.

I think metacritic doesn't count the lowest and the highest review. If I'm right that could change your numbers a bit.

The only usefull thing on metacritic is the user score.

OMGWTFBBQ!?!? Uncharted is rated right, but ODST isn't, not because they are biased, but because they haven't change the score >__>. Very useless thread.

That's right.

Honestly, I think that if ODST had released as an Expansion or DLC it would be low 90's average. It is a great game, and the almost every review states this, however, the fact that (to some) it's content is not worth the price, it's score is much lower that it could/should have been.

Oh, and regarding biased towards Uncharted 2. I am confident that the game is actually worthy of it's reviews!

I will be playing ODST and Uncharted 2 this holiday, so as a gamer, I am very very happy regardless of review average.
