Forums - Sales Discussion - The Official 5 week Sept USA NPD Thread (Data released ~6:30 pm 10/18/2007)

I wonder how Sony Defence Force plans on spinning these numbers, since the PS family was not the highest selling 'combination' this month.

Seems like Halo sales really brought down Wii sales. I'm worried for the XBox360 though. When 3rd parties see how well the 1st party software does it may scare them off from trying to compete.

That's easy... PS2+PS3+PSP > X360... barely...

maybe the 60G is actually running out and less people are bothered about the 80G?...i mean sales are almost as low as the went before the price re-shuffle.

@ thet MS thing you posted DonWii..."outsells PS3 5:1", can MS not count, the Wii outsold the PS3 4:1, the 360 was a bit more than 4:1.....5:1 would have meant 600k sales

Just a random thought here.

Is is possible that NPD may understate the sales of some systems and software (and consequently overestimate the sales of others) because it does not track Wal-Mart?

It seems almost everytime I am in one of those stores, someone is getting something out of the Nintendo case (or at least looking at it). Meanwhile, I never see anyone showing interest in the Xbox 360 or PS3 cases.

Maybe it is just happenstance. Or maybe certain shoppers go to different stores (and not game stores). Certainly if you go into a Gamestop (or read GameInformer) you get the impression that the PS3 has a lot to offer and the Wii is just kind of there.

Stranglehold at 104,200 -- Midway is going to be hurting...

Other shockers:
Warhawk at 45K and Madden PS2 outselling Madden 360 in September by over 20K.

Microsoft's Response:

You've seen the raw numbers, now read the Microsoft spin on them, Nintendo and Sony coming soon. There is no arguing that September was an amazing month for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft. The went from second to first place, pushed by the astounding sales of Halo 3. Here are some of their bullet points for the month:

Xbox 360 Tops Console Sales in September and outsells PS3 5:1
o Xbox 360 sales built upon its growth from last month, showing a 50 percent increase for the month of September selling an average of 105,600 consoles per week. Total sales were more than 528,000 Xbox 360 consoles sold, compared to 501,000 for Wii and 119,000 for PS3.

o PS3 sales posted an average weekly decline of 27 percent.

Xbox 360 software revenue at retail outsold PS3's software portfolio 8:1 and Wii's 4:1, selling 3 times more than both platforms combined.
o For the month of September according to NPD, Xbox 360 software represented 74 percent of total software sales for the next generation market compared to 17 percent for Wii and 9 percent for PS3. Even without the sales of "Halo 3" the Xbox 360 portfolio outsold the PS3 portfolio 2:1.

Additionally, Xbox 360 is home to the best-selling games with the top-rated next-generation titles.
o According to the world-wide authority in entertainment reviews, Metacritic, Xbox 360 has 80 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher compared to just 31 for PS3 and 11 for Wii.

o Newly released title "The Orange Box" (Valve) and the highly anticipated title "Mass Effect" (Microsoft Game Studios) have both generated rankings of 97 and higher according to Metacritic. And not to forget "BioShock" (2KGames) which remains one of the year's highest rated games.

Xbox 360 held six spots in the Top Ten Console Games, led by initial sales of "Halo 3" Xbox 360
o In its first two weeks, the three editions of "Halo 3" placed #1, 2 and 3 overall for console title sales - for a total of more than $225 million in sales in the U.S. with 3.3 million units. Average unit prices were $69 per game. The $130 "Halo 3: Legendary Edition" alone sold twice as many units as the top title for PS3 "Heavenly Sword" (SCE); the helmet is mightier than the sword.

o Proving that Xbox 360 is the new home for sports gamers, "Madden NFL '08" (EA) on Xbox 360 was again the leading next gen platform with 173,000 units sold, compared to the PS3 at 62,000 and Wii at 58,000. To date, "Madden NFL '08" has sold 1.1 million units on Xbox 360, 87 percent more than other next-gen platforms combined.

o Xbox 360 exclusive "BioShock" has sold 641,000 units through the end of September and remains to be on track to sell more than 1 million units. While "Halo 3" and "Madden NFL '08" have led the way as the first of a string of titles that are expected to sell more than 1 million units between now and the end of the year.

o Rounding out the top titles for Xbox 360, "Skate" (EA) came in at #6. The Xbox 360 version of the innovative titles outsold the PS3 version 6:1.

If I do some math here I think we can conclude Halo 3 alone to account for 74-18=56% of the total software sales on next-gen consoles for the month. The 18% comes from multiplying PS3 percentage by 2, given that the text states that other 360 software outsold PS3 software by 2 to 1.

Does this NPD period coincide with the announcement by Microsoft that they garnered 300 milion dollar in sales for Halo 3? If so then 75% of those sales would come from the US.

Just about every store I go to still has 60gb and the online retailers seemed to be stocked as well.

SDF:

Playstation Family - 618.9k
Xbox 360 - 527.8k
Wii - 501k
DS - 495.8k

"As you can see, the Playstation family comes out on top again, with an AMAZING Heavenly Sword debut for September."

That might be one way the SDF spins it, no?

Er, what? 360 third party games sell better than 3rd party games from any other console. Unless your post is sarcasm... hard to tell on the internet.
