Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The next Nintendo..is it destined to fail?

Ok, before everyone jumps to conclusions - I'm not saying the next Nintendo WILL fail.  I think it will actually do fairly well.  However, based upon the volume of sales that the Wii is enjoying so far and the assumed end amount sold, will the next Nintendo be seen as a failure if it can't live up to the Wii?  I honestly don't expect Nintendo's next console to match the Wii in sales..I think that's a ludicrous assumption.  We also know that people like to call things failures that don't match up to their predecessors or exceed them.

It's similar to what people were talking about in the thread about FFVIII being on the PSN.  The game was destined to 'fail' because it followed FFVII, even though it didn't really fail, and otherwise most everyone who played it thought it was a good game. I expect Nintendo's next console to break the 100 million mark, but if it doesn't enjoy the level of success that the Wii has, do you think people will start to consider it and call it a failure?

I personally won't unless it's sales bomb, but then it really will be a failure.  What do you think?

Nintendo will perfect everything that made the Wii great, and also give it a robust online component and HD visuals, but you can expect it to launch at 250$ or less, (No Nintendo console ahs ever been more then 250$), also expect a pack-in title, Wii Sports was a real selling point for the Wii and Im sure Wii Sports HD will too

It depends, will Nintendo make a console that customers ultimately want?

Pixel Art can be fun.

^^I hope they do build on the success of the Wii. However, I'm curious about the controller..the Wiimote is revolutionary, but it won't be this 'amazing new thing' if they use a similar upgraded version for their next console. Do you think they're definitely going with the same control scheme, and how much do you think either answer to that question will affect its sales?

If you're thinking that Nintendo will make the Wii's successor a upgraded Wii.. you might be sorely dissappointed.

they will go with a very similar control scheme, as Iv pointed out a ton of times before Nintendo follows the revolution / perfection strategy

NES was a revolution
SNES a perfection of what the NES brought to the table
N64 was a revolution
GCN a perfection of the N64
Wii was a revolution (no pun intended)
Wii 2 will perfect the Wii

This thread is destined to be rampant with pure speculation.

I think this is one of the most difficult predicions in the history of videogaming:
WHAT WILL NINTENDO DO NEXT!?

I'm not exactly asking what Nintendo will do next more than I'm asking if you think their next console, whatever it is, will be considered a failure if it doesn't match the sales of the Wii.

And yes, I think their next console will be an upgraded version of the Wii, however I see it being a more drastic upgrade than we're normally keen to seeing from generation to generation. Nintendo has captured the casuals and some hardcores. If they can make the Wii as good as or at least close to as powerful as the next Playstation or XBOX, I can see them taking some of the audience that the 360 and PS3 appeals to that the Wii doesn't.

@O-D-C
Do you think the control scheme will help or hurt, though? AFAIK, the Gamecube didn't do the best - which isn't to say it didn't have some good games, but it just didn't perform the best as a console.

Ask me thiis after we actually no what their next console is...

4 ≈ One

I think what they do with their next console is has 100% influence on whether it'll be successful or not. They could possibly fall even further behind graphically with the next gen OR they can seriously compete like they did with GC.

I didn't diss your thred. It was a way of saying that the question you posed is a VERY difficult one indeed. BUT please concur with me that there's a 1to1 relation between what they do next and their level of success....
