Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Natal Ricochet lags and has jittering.

Its amazing that out of a mostly positive preview, you pick out the only two lines which are in any way negative and hail it as a failure a year before release. Also, although he said it was jittery he also said something else which you "accidentally" missed out. Here, i'll quote it for you:

"And if you try to stand perfectly still, you'll notice a little bit of a jittery motion on the avatar. That's more of a testament to its power of accurately reflecting your every motion than it is anything else"

Looking at your sig and your comments about the Wii and Sony controllers leads me to think that this is a trolling thread anyway, but even if its not, like everyone else has said it is way to early to start quoting and making claims about this when its still a year away.

The PS2 eye toy also used full body motion tracking, and the PSEye. Check this vid "project natal debunked":

Wasn't the Eyetoy 2D? As in if you wanted to hit someone you would have to move your arms away from your body in a way that the camera could see some object comming away from the 2D mass that is your body. Natal is supposed to be able to make a digital 3D version of you instead of just registering a moving 2D mass. But I'm going to wait and see, developers seem extreemly positive so I doubt it's just another Eyetoy.

@Keep_the_change Ya I agree with you, the eye-toy can be used to simulate similar functions.

@Grey21 Thats what the wand is for. To give the added 3d aspect to the eyetoy. Remember the Sony motion control scheme is not only the wand but the eye-toy also.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Wand is for the PS3 right? You said that the PS2 also had full body motion. The way I see it, it just follows a flat moving object. I'm not saying that the PS3 Wand is a bad idea, in fact I like that there is still something with buttons in your hand over a device that tracks body motions. But I'm wondering, wouldn't the PS3 Wand be limited to 3D arm movement while the body is still a 2D mass (for the PS3 eyetoy)?

Whatever it is, Natal and the PS Wand aren't here yet so I'm not going to get excited or disappointed in them just yet. As for the PS2 Eyetoy, did that facial recognition work? The MS representitive says it has facial recognisation that is much better then anything else in this industry. The guy who made the hate vid seems to suggest the PS2 has facial recognition that is just as good.

Aside from all the concern of whether it will work or not with it possibly being a year out for finalization...What I would question more about what Microsoft is doing is the software they are demoing with it. Just like the PS3 Wand, neither system has demonstrated an application that can catch someones attention like Wii Sport.

...Both these techs need to come out the gate with a SYSTEM SELLING application. Right now people are hype over the possibilities more so then the application.

The Interweb is about overreaction, this is what makes it great!

...Imagine how boring the interweb would be if everyone thought logically?

Just like with ODST and the "it started out as an expansion" comment certain owners have latched onto something to rag on MS for without reading (or deliberately ignoring) the rest "We thought of it more as an expansion and then it grew well beyond that."
Same here. What about all the lag free comments given to Burnout Paradise or the fact that no-one has mentioned any problems like this with Beautiful Katamari. So far 1 out of 5 games and even that one game people have had a blast with it is very good for a tech demo.

But when people are intimidated or jealous these things happen.

Umm... Keep_the_change is just sad that the Wii's gimmick is about to be outdone by an even more gimmicky gimmick.

@Keep_the_Change
Please stop. You are not doing yourself any favors. The petty insults are getting you nowhere

That video of the debunk was pretty cool to see.  Never saw that part of sony's motion device before.  Whether it's 2D or 3D, it demonstrated pretty well that they had the ability to go in MS direction a long time ago.  MS is doing a better job with marketing and demonstrating.  But it appears the eye toy is just as good from this video.  That was impressive.

As far as the article, I agree with most that the article was pretty positive and one small negative was focused on way more than the article focused on it.  But why couldn't MS go 60fps on the Natal since it's so technologically advanced?  That leaves me curious.  And in the article, saying a testament to Natal's power?  If it's seeing someone standing still, then it should be standing still on screen, not jittering.  That doesn't make since to me either.

Natal will be cool to try out but I'm not sure about it.  With Wii and motion control, my arm will hurt after a night of bowling or tennis or even golfing a lot with Tiger 10.  But you put your whole body into gaming, and I'm seeing a lot of phone calls from people calling in to work sick and a lot of Dr. visits.  lol

Can't wait till release to see how it performs.

Some brand new technology that's multiples more complex than any other control scheme attempted before and isn't going to be released for another year isn't yet ready for prime time?!? :)

To others' (not the OP) comparisons with the Wiimote:

The difficulties and complexities of a system which:

1. uses (relatively) new and (so far) unused tech
2. takes a depth image and uses *completely* new software (being written and tweaked at this moment) to identify and track a person's (or multiple peoples') skeletons in real time

are so vastly greater than any Wii-style remote (two points and an accelerometer) that a comparison between the two as a justification for why there is a problem with Natal's progress is not only a gross simplification, but just underscores some peoples' misunderstandings of how different (and tricky to create) a system like Natal is.

Natal at the moment is not final hardware, not final software, and due to this, the underlying system has few meaningful non-required code optimizations.

In game development (as some who work in games dev here can probably attest) the process is oftentimes: get the thing working properly in as many cases as possible, then, once the functionality is solid (or very nearly so) and the bugs mostly gone, kick in with the optimizations to eek out every last bit of performance. We've all heard stories about a game going from 20fps to 30+ in the last few weeks of development.

Back to this article - here are another few quotes (as we are talking about Natal impressions in this thread, after all):

"Whether you're swinging at a ball, stepping to the side for a kick save, or pelvic thrusting towards a ball like a sex-starved maniac, Natal will convey your motions on to the screen exactly how you'd expect it to"

Beautiful Katamari: "The result is a Katamari game that a newcomer could actually play without struggling to drive the ball around like a tank. Pretty darn cool."

"Ricochet is proof that jumping around like a crazed baboon can be fun. Play it with your girlfriend. Play it with your parents. But most of all play it with your little brother or cousin"

When did this turn into a Natal vs. Eyetoy thread? *sigh*
