Forums - Sony Discussion - SEGA leaks Sony's plans for PS2 and Dreamcast emulation on PS3

Reading the full memo posted (http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/formats/playstation3/seg-scea-meeting-$1328919.htm) a few thoughts crossed my mind.

First, a lot of this is what Sony wants Sega to do, not necessarily what Sega wants to do or will do. However, some of it is Sega's reactions to Sony's proposals.

Much of it is using Home to market games.

If the memo is correct, Sony has priced its wand and decided how to bundle it. It is also providing a list of titles for which it wants to see Wand support from Sega.

The DC conversation appears to be about timed exclusivity (If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.)

The $99 Sonic collection is very strange -- and expensive.

The word "emulator" is used in the PS2 header, but the discussion sounds like reselling games. (SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc). This appears to be very different from the Xbox 360 patches to play Xbox games.

noob question:
Were DC games on DVD or CD?

CD/GD

DVD didn't exist back then until PS2 cameout and Dreamcast went into pirating hell and sold terribly.

they announced DVD expansion but it was too late and they discontinued it.

DVD did exist even when DC was released but it was too expensive at the time. PS2 wasn't first DVD-player, it came over 3 years after first DVD players were released.

sorry. i meant to say DVD gaming.

This sounds like they are going to make the Dreamcast games available on PSN. Are the Dreamcast's GD-ROMs readable by the PS3's drive or must one pay to download rather than pick up copies of games would be emulated?

Is there any mention of whether Sony is going to allow the PS2 discs to work with this new emulation system? Presumably they're going to want PSN downloads for titles as that's where there money comes from...

?

How ironic that Sega choses a Sony platform to emulate the Dreamcast. I am not pleased.

Why not?

because hype for a Sony console was one of the reasons that the dreamcast died

I think people bitching about not being able to play their already purchased PS2 games are complete morons. Why do you own PS2 games if you cant play them now, or if theyre that important to you why would you get rid of the hardware you owned at one point to play them.

These games will and should be downloadable and played on PS3 sans PS2 discs.

WTF is the point in owning PS2 games and wanting them to play in the current PS3 because the only reason to want such a thing is if you cant play them at the current time, which means you either didnt care enough to keep the hardware to play them or youre just bitching to bitch.

No. hype did nothing. The fact the PS2 was more desirable with a DVD player and Sony had earned a reputation from the PS1 whereas sega screwed the pooch with the sega CD and sega saturn and sega didnt manufacture enough Dreamcasts upon launch and keep supply up for demand are why the dreamcast failed.

Sega is to blame, no one else. sorry. You put out 2 terriblely received consoles before the dreamcast, you dont make enough product to sell and keep people happy and the product penetration up and consant combined with tech that was inferier (no dvd) is how the dreamcast fell from grace.

its SEGA's own fualt that they pulled the plug. i do not see how Sony "Killed" the dreamcast

Sega did alot of questionable stuff that made developers don't care anymore. one of them is pulling the plug on the saturn WAY too soon, which made the developers who supported it angry.

another reason is piracy. and SEGA didn't care much about it, which made developers get even more distant from the Dreamcast.

you see with huge piracy and no support, the developers can't get any money.

then SEGA didn't have any choice but get out of the console biz.

Joystiq.com was also talking about this. They currently have 2 articles up talking about a meeting between Sega and Sony America.

Playstation Home spaces for all Sega properies.

Dreamcast and PS2 on the PSN Store.

What if this is an early look at Sony buying Sega?

A division that is currently losing money buying up a new company that does not consistently post profits? Yea, not going to happen.
