Forums - Sales Discussion - How Michael Jackson Singstar will boost PS3?

Sing Star: Michael Jackson should sell extremely well on PS3 due to his death, turning him into a forgotten star into a music legend.

Lip-synching Michael Jackson songs should be fun. Lol @ all those people who will be screwing up Michael Jackson's songs due to having terrible voices, bad pitch/tone and failing to reach those near impossible notes. Michael Jackson was an amazing singer/dancer who is now a legend.

Hopefully Rockband and Guitar Hero Michael Jackson games will pop up sooner or later in the future.

Michael Jackson's death has turned into a huge windfall for the music industry and the Michael Jackson estate.

How was Michael ever forgotton, when numerous musical artist were influenced by his music and dancing than any other artists? He was already a legend before his death in my opinion.

I see PS3 owners in this thread say they have never been the least bit interested in Singstar but Singstar MJ is a definite buy for them. Then they go on to say it won't move any PS3 hardware. Uhhhh what?

If there are PS3 owners without the least bit of interest in Singstar who will get Singstar MJ, then you can be sure there are non-PS3 owners who WILL buy PS3 for Singstar MJ. Singstar MJ is a system seller no doubt about it. I think Sony could easily sell 1 million PS3s to people who probably wouldn't buy a PS3 if not for Singstar MJ, possibly more. Who woulda thought a Singstar game would be a system seller when there are few real system sellers left this generation?

While Superchunk is right that there is more money to be made for Sony by licensing his material to multiplat games, in the short term Sony are better to keep it exclusive (i.e. limited to Singstar) until MJ's hardware selling potential has largely played out. Sony can sell the multi-plat rights to the highest bidder, which could include having some PS3 exclusive content.

Singstar MJ would/will sell multi-millions. And Singstar is such a cheap game to make, especially if you own the rights to every song on the game. Probably only need to sell 100K or so for the game to break even.

This is confirmed?

If so it is really stupid for Sony to make this exclusive. The routinely put their movie franchises on other consoles and MJ has way too much of a mass market appeal to force it on the PS3.

Seriously will limit its potential.

Should nintendo make mario-games multiplatform too? Keeping them exclusive limit their potential!

Coooool. I'm crazy about the SingStar series... Must buy for the holidays

Since we are talking about the most successfull entertainer of all time I can see the game selling 7-9 million copies and selling 2-3 million PS3 hardware units alone.

You're completely missing my point and obviously didn't read the rest of my posts.

Its not about making a SingStar game for other companies. i.e. similar to Mario.

Its about taking a movie/music IP that Sony owns and not using it in a way that maximizes the company's (aka Sony) profits from that IP. MJ is not a gaming IP, he's an music IP and similar to Sony's Movie IPs they should lease it out and make far more from royalties accross all platforms.

Now, if their long-term goal is to make money from SingStar first, then allow others, i.e. rockband, GH, etc, make their own games months later, then that would be a good way to do it as well.

Superchunk, that's like saying no Sony game should be exclusive because they'd make more money making every game multiplatform.

While that may be true, that is not my point on *this* particular product.

MJ is absolutely HUGE! Since Sony owns the rights they could be doing as Soriku suggests and making Singstar for themselves and then shortly afterward allow Rockband or whatever to make a MJ version as well. That would be smart.

But, to only allow a Singstar version on the limited PS3 userbase is a poor business decision imo.

Other general games can and need to be exclusive to cause a need to purchase your hardware, however, with a property like MJ that is a time when maximising potential return is far outweighed by leasing to a 3rd party and swimming in royalties.

What other games would work with a MJ license?  Neither Rock Band nor Guitar Hero make any sense.  Isn't Singstar the most popular/best selling karaoke game this generation?

Also, as others have said exclusives by their nature limit sales of software at the expense of increasing hardware value.  I would love to see PS3 versions of Mario Kart and Halo, but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Why wouldn't RB/GH work? In the band environment with mics its the full experience. I would jam out on the Beat It Guitar and/or try to sing the lyrics.

Singstar is a great game for the MJ idea, but it just wasn't the smart fiscal move imo.

As for you last comment and others who say the samething, all of you are being stupid. I never said "SingStar" should be made for other consoles. That is a Sony games IP. I said MJ should be leased to 3rd party game. Sony already does this with a lot of its Music/Movie IPs, why? Why not force them to only be on Playstation family? Because, they will make far more money for Sony being open. Same exact idea here.

I don't see any difference. Nintendo could make more money by royalties if they allowed other companies use mario in their games.

Judging from the responses on this thread, you should reconsider who is being stupid.
