Forums - Sony Discussion - GRAN TURISMO PSP Eurogamer Review -- 7/10 (FALL from grace for GT)?!

The game sounds terrible and needless to say am not going to bother with it. Not having a career mode seems to have gone really badly for this game and there is no excuse for not having it. I know it was suppose to be an assessable game but damn some silly decisions were made for this game.

The 15k pre-orders seems to high at the moment; tanking will be a nice way to show PD what people want in GT games.

People, this is the FIRST PSP release of Gran Turismo. It isn't their most important project of the century...

I'm not saying I condone the lack of the most important mode in GT, but I do feel like lumping this with GT5 aren't reasonable. They are not even in the same league. That's like saying if LBP PSP isn't a good game, it's telling for the next console iteration. Hardly...

But what it does tell us is that the developer is willing to compromise in quality for expediency. That is something that wasn't even conceivable before this.

Well, we don't have proof of that, it's speculation. I'm sure many people will pick this up and just play to have fun. Lack of Career mode could be a bad thing (to me it is), or a good thing (some people will just want to pick up and play).

Either way, GT5 shouldn't be pegged with this, and that was my point.

But it will. And it certainly should be. If you want to release a driving game called Gran Turismo it will be held to Gran Turismo standards.

Halo Wars was different. It was a Halo game as a RTS. If it were a Gran Turismo RPG, haha, id see your point.

But PD made it. Its Gran Turismo. This will stick in many peoples minds unless they release a demo of GT5 early and quickly announce the features of GT5 in full to make people quickly forget this.

I think its SONY's fault for rushing the game.....

polyphony needed more time, SONY rushed them

Rushed!?!?!

Originally named Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, the game was intended to be one of the flagship games of the PlayStation Portable. The game was supposed to release in 2005.

EMULATION is the past.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

@RPG

so now can you stop expecting GT5 sales to be low because of GT:PSP?

There's no excuse for the lack of career mode, even PSOne games had that.

Seriously when starscream says something bad about a psp game you know something is wrong.

Arstechnica seemed to like it.  http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2009/09/gran-turismo-psp-review-portable-racing-grows-up.ars

To put it very simply: this is the best portable racing game you can buy at the moment. At times it feels almost like a magic trick; Polyphony has done some amazing things with the hardware. It's very real, however, and in a few weeks it will be here. Save some money in the ol' gaming budget, whether you buy a PSP Go or not, you'll want to pick this game up.

The Good

  • Absolutely stunning, 60FPS graphics
  • The ability to listen to your own music will playing
  • Wide variety of tracks and cars
  • Detailed information and history of cars
  • Races are simple to set up, can be finished in minutes, although longer tracks are available
  • Strong multiplayer, with the ability to both share and trade cars with your friends
  • Zippy loading times when installed to memory stick, UMD release includes the install option

The Bad

  • No online infrastructure mode
  • Cockpit view is just the black shape of the windshield
  • Only four cars in races, in both single and multiplayer
  • A small selection of cars available to buy at the dealership, making it hard to browse all the available vehicles
  • No damage to the cars
  • AI can feel rather artificial and sterile
  • Finding your saved replays is a pain in the ass, because there is no way to simply browse what you've saved; they're arranged by track

The Ugly

  • People who traded in their PSP systems sheepishly buying another unit to play this

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

That's probably the only good thing that might come from this.

Not having a career mode has really bit PD in the ass. If it did have career mode the game would easily have scored at least 8.0 but it should have been there. Yamauchi wanted this to be an assessable game for all people and said if people wanted a fully fledged GT game that would be GT5.

Stupid decision is stupid though and there are simply no excuses.

^^

it might end up the low 80's on metcritic, a drop for GT games, but not that horrible
