Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Malstrom responds to Wii price cut.

I think he lumped in Animal Crossing with that, and I don't get how it would be either.

I'm guessing he's trying to do general ideas with the Wii, and not considering the nuances in parts.

hhmmm the only problem wiht this rant is that he says the ds has never had a price cut and that is false it did have a price cut when the ds came out it was 200 or 225 i cant remember but the price drop came out a year or two after the ds was out so the way i see it this price drop is to tell sony and microsoft that they can drop the price too and then sell even more then what the ps3 did on its price drop. i mean if you dont havea a wii already and i knw alot was debating on gettin gone cause of its 250 price tag but at 199 those ont he boarder will go pick it up now its like what happend to the ps2 when they dropped the price it sold well again for a while and then took the #1 spot for good after that price drop.

The gap was in the hopes third parties would fill it, which they did with the DS. So it's just as much the fault of third parties for not taking the obvious opportunity.

How do you know that? It could have been that they were relying too much on a couple of big hits instead of having a more constant release of games. Either ways it's their fault for relying on someone from the outside.

They did it with the DS. Did you miss what happened there? And don't tell me it's Nintendo's fault for "relying", when they had plenty of reason to think it would repeat with the Wii. The third parties chose not to take advantage of that. It's their fault for refusing to go with the system sooner.

Haven't read all the posts, so forgive me if I repeat some comments.

$199 = more market penetration. $199 after this long = profit on console, albeit LESS profit, but profit nonetheless. A pricecut now has greater impact on sales for the holiday. There won't be another pricecut for another 2-3 years. This is still Blue Ocean. You can't expect to tap out absolutely every possible consumer at the launch price point almost 3 years later, that's ridiculous. If the price cut meant Nintendo LOSING money on sales, then that's when it's no longer Blue Ocean.

And it's still not in competition with the other consoles. It's in competition with public interest. If the price is getting in the way of that, then it would be a good idea for Nintendo to reduce that.

Why are people constantly saying that Wii Fit+ is going to make the Wii sales go over the roof? The game is not aimed for a new audience, as it has been on shelves for more than a year and a half. It's barely a repackaging with some new activities and it's more expensive, how is that supposed to bring in new customers?

Besides, it was Nintendo's fault this happened because of the lack of SW throughout the year. They made the same mistake than last year which was relying on a couple of games for 6 months or more. Price cut is an emergency thing they have to cater to to avoid losing more momentum. If SW was the answer, then it's their fault for releasing barely anything in the entire year.

Was it really a mistake last year, though? I mean, two titles basically did carry the whole year last year, it was only this year where that strategy came up rather short, because of the lacklustre nature of Wii Music and Animal Crossing.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

“While supply is on the rise as global competition intensifies, there is no clear evidence of an increase in demand worldwide, and statistics even point to declining populations in many developed markets.

“The result has been accelerated commoditization of products and services, increasing price wars, and shrinking profit margins. Recent industrywide studies on major American brands confirm this trend. They reveal that for major product and service categories, brands are generally becoming more similar, and as they are becoming more similar people increasingly select based on price. People no longer insist, as in the past, that their laundry detergent be Tide. Nore will they necessarily stick to Colgate when Crest is on sale, and vice versa. In overcrowded industries, differentiating brands becomes harder in both economic upturns and downturns.

“All this suggests that the business environment in which most strategy and management approaches of the twentieth century evolved is increasingly disappearing.”

-Blue Ocean Strategy, page 8.

Every price cut ever has increased sales in the long run. Why would this one be any different?

Because a price cut never works in bringing momentum
