Forums - Nintendo Discussion - More Wii price cut evidence

More signs of the apocalypse -- Pachter appears to have gotten this one right.

While I have said that Nintendo would not cut its price because it would reduce its profits (and if this is true, I will eat my proverbial crow), my analysis did not include increased software demand. A lot of $50 first-party titles which have been fully capitalized will move because of this. And a lot of WFP balance boards for $100.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Anyone that said a price cut was needed was instantly called away and told that Nintendo always follows Blue Ocean strategy and that they would bring games and thousands of things before cutting the price. Yet no one took into consideration the death of momentum and the inability they will have to reach projections without it. I will be very happy to serve crow to many people.

I have tofu crow baking in the oven, just in case

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

It does sound and seem reasonable that this will be official.
I think they should release a colored Wii bundle with Wii sports resort for $250 as well.
Just to spike the punch even more :)

Good news for everyone since all the consoles are getting price cuts. It should be a great Xmas for many gamers this year!!

I am perplexed. I just do not know what to think. First, I thought that this might be a temporary price cut but then why would Nintendo raise the price after the holidays. That move would cut out a lot of potential customers. Then I thought that this was a bad move if it is prove to be real. Nintendo still has a lot of software still selling for their launch retail price. They could easily launch their player's choice games for 19.99 to push system sales. Next I thought that this could be that Toys r Us is lowering the price on the Wii to attract customers during these hard economic times.

Anyway, we will all have to wait to see if it is true.

Enjoy your crow then. You claimed there won't be a price cut because there is no October conference, remember? http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=85814

I think too many people see it as a good thing. This is a bad thing.

Wii sales are fine, even if they'll miss their projection. They need software, not price cuts (which we haven't had moving software since early 08). This will only get them in a price war if they do, something the system is trying to avoid.

I see this as a bad thing. Nintendo can get the momentum started with NSMBWii, Zelda (if it uses lots of MP and is action packed) and the Vitality Sensor game. This is a bad idea for Nintendo. Unless they are removing Wii Sports, then maybe. Other possibility is keeping Wii Sports and adding Wii Sports Resort to the $250 package. Then it would make sense. I hope that is their plan.

You focus too much on projections. That is a very short term thinking. The reason many thought the price cut wouldn't happen is because it is a bad idea. It only seemed logical to think they wouldn't cut the price. Projections only look at quarterly and yearly results. In the long run, they are meaningless. This can cause a lot of problems down the road for Nintendo. One being a lack of revenue that could go to R&D for new products or better software. Another is this means they are competing, which may destory everything they've worked for.

@ Smashchu2,

As I stated in my previous post, Nintendo still has games like Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. Brawl, and Mario Kart still selling at 49.99. They could introduce their players choice line which would drop these games down to 19.99. This would get more people to buy the software and the console. What good is a price drop if games that are two to three years old are still 49.99?

Everyone focusing on Nintendo missing their shipment projections is forgetting that if they do a price cut they'll just miss their profit projections instead.

And if this price cut actually happens it's basically just Nintendo admitting that they have no quality hardware-moving software coming in the next year, and they don't have any confidence in NSMB Wii in particular.
