Forums - General Discussion - Stupid Old People: Videogames/Computers Made Kids Fat

It all depends on the regime of the kids. I can buy that a kid who exclusively plays games in his spare time and doesn't eat right will get fat. Or at least, fatter then the kid who exclusively plays games and mostly eats veggies and fruits.

The truth is, most gamers at least on these boards are doing sports BESIDES gaming. Go look up a "what sports do you play" thread. People forget this. Whenever the stereotype: "the fat gamer" comes up, they can ONLY imagine the fat kid in his beanbag down in the basement doing nothing but games while reality proves to be different.

What is even worse is that the the causality assumed isn't even measured to other groups. I mean, the people exclaiming this crap are likely the same researchers who come home and spent a good 4 hours watching television and eating chips. Double standards, and a lack of reality drive these researches and indeed, it is tiresome.

Reading the last part made me think of something: Back when I was in 6th grade we had some ladies come to our school and preach to us about eating fruits, veggies, and all the other stuff from that food triangle diagram and ease up on the sweets. The main lady who did the presentation was quite rotund. Double standards like this really bother me. "Practice what you preach."

yeah its not the parents fault who feed the kids mcdonalds 4 nights a week, its the video games.

Lol.

Food makes you fat , not videogames.

But people who are very physically active can eat more without becoming fat.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Ted, I think if your 140 pounds at 6'2 there's something wrong. I'm a year younger than you (around our age we usually get a little heavier each year for the next few years) I'm your height and I'm 160. And I'm very thin. Perhaps all the video games is making you unhealthy in the other direction. Go eat some more mcdonalds!

Hate to break it to you guy but games are a problem….and there is no point in denying it

However they are not the only reason, poor diet is there 2

The problem is that growing up kids used to get home from school and then head outside to play some games with friends, now they are more likely to get home grab a pop and a bag of chips then tuck into 2-3 hours of games and never see the light of the sun---and whats more parents will let that happen then wonder why their kids are getting fat

Now before I get blasted with the , but hey I do that and I am not fat thing…so what? You’re a minority not the majority……if you were the majority then this would not be an issue to begin with and they would be touting the health benefits of gaming….

That’s why when my daughter gets old enough to game I am not going to just let her sit in front of the various systems and let it do the parenting for me, I am going to say hey lets go to the park for an hour then how about we come back and shoot a few zombies…

Haha, that's a lie. I've never been anywhere close to being remotely fat. If you've seen me, you'll understand why. Heck, last fall, I lost weight! (This was bad since I was sick the whole season and slept for most of the time), and I got that weight back by excersizing. I'm still not back to where I was though. And let me tell you, with thousands of hours logged on pokemon games alone as a child, I play a lot of video games.

I agree with this.  Games are an alternative to physical activity just like movies, TV, and the like.  They're not bad for you themselves, but ignoring exercise because you're busying playing them is.
