Seriously, I don't know if Nintendo still is in control of the situation. I used to argue in their favor, that they'd surely be secretly developing fantastic games for the moment when Wii sales would start to drop. But now we're 3 years in the cycle, and there hasn't been a Nintendo game worth buying since Mario Kart Wii - which will be 1 1/2 years old when NSMB Wii launches.

My girlfriend is no gamer at all, but recently she actually asked if we should go and buy a game to play together. Twice we returned from Gamestop empty-handed, cause the Wii shelf consisted of 100% rubbish I wouldn't want to play. Not only Nintendo's own games, of course, 3rd parties are even worse. Is there a single Square/Enix Wii game that doesn't look like it was made for 8 year olds?
Nintendo's GamesCom booth was a bore, too... 50% Mario&Sonic2, lots of WSR and WF+. The only good Wii game was, again, NSMB Wii.

And what will be after NSMB Wii?
I'm desperately waiting for SMG2, but I guess it won't release before winter 2010... and don't get me started on Zelda, when will that game hit the stores? 2012?!? I need my Zelda fix. Or something similar! I want a big, epic adventure to play all night. Sigh... back then, on the SNES, there always were tons of games I was interested in. Now I'm having trouble finding a single one. Probably it's just me getting old. Or cold Zelda turkey.

Back on topic: Considering the amount of money Nintendo must have made this generation, it boggles my mind that they were not able to churn out both, a ton of casual games AND a stream of traditional games. They should have, cause I'm really afraid it's going to bite them in the arse.

They will do A) nothing or B) lower the price *yawn*.

Metroid other m, Trauma team, The grinder, super mario galaxy 2 yes, no more heroes 2, red steel 2, and many more unannounced games, such as from sora and retro.  Nintendo wasn't at gamescom were they?  and thery have they're conference this October.

Sure they were at gamescom, I was there & at their booth. And it was 75% WSR, WF+ and M&S2.

Of the games you mentioned, most are from genres I'm not interested in (Grinder, No more heroes 2, Trauma Team). Played the Red Steel 2 demo, it's quite good. I'll give Other M a try although I didn't enjoy the Prime games, cause it looks more fun (I suck at FPS). But it won't be released before holiday 2010 either, right?

So... right now it looks like all I'm gonna buy is NSMB Wii in 2009, SMG2 (maybe Other M) in 2010 and Zelda in 2011-12.

But I do admit that, at least partially, my personal taste is to blame. If I was interested in typical "mature" games, I'd have a lot more choices (Metroid Prime, Conduit and other High Voltage games, Resident Evil, ...).

Well they're most likely saving their big guns till October,  There are plent of DS games for me to buy but there are 3 wii games I'm getting later this year.  I had it in my mind that it was your taste was to blame , but we all have our differences.

Buying in 2015: Captain toad: treasure tracker,

mario maker

new 3ds

yoshi woolly world

zelda U

majora's mask 3d

Whatever Nintendo will do, I still firmly believe we'll see Wii outselling its competitors again in the not-too-distant future. Of course the HD consoles are selling tons right now. They had announced pricecuts and a whole revamped console coming up, the whole world knew about that and people were waiting for the Slim to come out and the pricecuts to take effect. It'd be sad if we hadn't seen a major increase in sales. But will it last? Of course not, sales of the HD consoles (especially the PS3) are probably going to remain higher than before, but no way are they going to stay at the level they are at right now. Expect huge drop-offs in sales in the coming weeks. That's not to say the Slim's launch wasn't a success, because it was, of course, a major success. :)

Also, anyone who thinks these recent actions are suddenly going to skyrocket either Sony's or MS' sales past Nintendo's is kind of daft. Anyone who thinks the Slim will be Sony's saviour and cause PS3 sales to pass the 360 is too. Please don't be offended. ;)

They don't need core games to boost sales in the West, really. The Wii's huge with games like WFP+ and NSMB Wii alone. In Japan it's not the case though, and they have a monster Japanese lineup coming.

You keep saying this, and while there's undoubtedly a bunch of great DS games coming, what Wii games are coming out in Japan that make it a monster lineup?

Demon's Souls Official Thread  | Currently playing: Left 4 Dead 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Magicka

Nintendo cutting the price would lower profits, that is not what I would do. What I would do is raise the perceived value of the system by packing in the upcoming Mario Game with Wii Sports in the Wii. Perhaps even bring out a new colour which would have the same effect that the Slim had (Wii Slim? Kind of pointless). Another thing they could do is give away Virtual Console points in order to stimulate online usage.

PS3 may be $299, but Wii is still $249, and a system which carries more value to the consumer. PS3 lowered the price as the result of surrendering their previous price stance becase they're losing the war by a margin of 60% behind the Wii. Nintendo is not the defeated here, Sony is for giving up profit ground.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Samurai Warriors 3, Final Fantasy, NSMB, Wii Fit+, Super Robot Taizen, Resident Evil, Mario and Sonic Winter Olympics, and still a possibility of Tales of Graces along with other decent sellers like Naruto. Thats a great lineup!

Ok so the PS3 slim launched with a pricedrop and it was a splash. 360 also got a pricedrop and is getting good increases. Now Wii weekly sales are being closed at, and the holidays are not gonna be as dominnant for Nintendo as the past 2 yrs have been. Wii is doomed right?

I beg to differ. Hey i'm a bit worried too, and maybe they're taking too much time to respond, but isn't that just typical Nintendo, acting all cool like nothing happened, never panicking? So this is what i think, and what i'm guessing. Just like Sony kept its yearly predictions, Nintendo has done so too, despite decreasing annual sales, and by a huge margin also! Sony had the slim up its sleeve, and i bet you Nintendo has so too. It's just too naiive to think the games could be the saviour for Nintendo and actually make up ground from last year's holidays numbers! I just dont see it.

What do i think Nintendo have been doing then? I think they didn't panic instantly, looked at the competition, studied their moves and there effects, and monitored sony's slim launch very carefully. Now what? Now they move, i think by october we will see something big from Nintendo announced, a pricedrop to say the least. I think they've monitored enough and not being able to satisfy their predictions(and it ain't looking good now) will be a huge blow, they definitly are up to something, and unlike Sony they can keep their secrets more than them. So expect something big to be announced by october, thats my prediction.

Thoughts?

The games should be the reason any console sells as well as the Wii does...but as you pointed out, that's not the case for the Wii, which I'm factors in to a lot of the "hate" it gets

What can they do? The main complaint about the console has been the lack of what people call "hardcore" or "past core" games (games that were mainstream in the past).

Unless they have a bunch of those games coming out, I really don't think a price drop will do much except lower the perceived value of the system.

Wii fit + may potentially be big for them along with a couple other "non-games" because their biggest supporters this gen have been traditionally non-gamers, and professionals who don't have time to game. The more pressure that Nintendo feels, the more they are going to target those demographics... vitality sensor, wii fit +, WSR and so on.

The same way the 360 Arcade $200 price and the $300 Slim lower the value of the 360 and PS3? You act like that amount of money is nothing. The PS2 is $99 and is still selling BECAUSE of its library. Pretty sure consumers don't think value is lost when most consumers think the Wii has the best library just looking at sales.

The thing is, the Wii is already more than worth the 250. To the average family, even if it was 50$ too much for a budget, the average game console over the last 10 years has been about 200.

For a concept as novel and family/health oriented as the wii's motion control, the 250$ is already worth it to parents and singles. 50$ will not change much. New ideas and new directions is what will attract more customers. To do that, they will do what they've always done. Introduce novelty. Change the colors, use new bundles, new ways to interact. They've barely even tried any new colors... so I don't think any price drop is imminent.

As for lowering the perceived value. I didn't really mean it would do that. I only meant that a price drop would be so insignificant that it would be analogous to a slight negative. It was a bad metaphor. I think it would get a slight bump, and maybe only decline slightly over last Xmas.

A better idea would be to change the colors and bundle with wii fit+ and have another bundle with NSMB and two controllers. That way they will only be losing maybe 20-30$ profit instead of 50$, while at the same time reintroducing Mario as the main concept of Nintendo in the style of the new generation.

BS! The games are EXACTLY the reason why the Wii sells.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Well, Nintendo should start making a new console...  And, have it ready before Sony and Microsoft get their stuff out... It may not be as powerful as the other 8th generation systems, but, it will sell... wait.. scratch that, that's a dumb idea.....

I don't think anyone would openly say "If these two games don't sell, we'll drop the price."  Because then, people will wait on the price drop, then get the two games they wanted afterwards.

I have no plans in buying a Wii at the moment, and thanks to this thread, I've decided I wont buy one without a 100 dollar price cut.  The ONLY two games I'd EVER get for the Wii would be Epic Mickey, and Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom.  I'm waiting to see how good Epic Mickey is... If Epic Mickey fails, or gets released for the PS3, I won't buy a Wii.

Wii must have a price drop, Epic Mickey MUST be an excellent game, and.. Well, Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom is just...  I dunno.  I want it, but, it's not enough to get me to buy a Wii.... 3 attack buttons really did it for me.  The more I think about it, the less I want TvC.

That's what Nintendo should do for me to buy a Wii.  360 has failed me, and Wii has just... been the cheap system to me...  I'm not a fan of Mario, and I'll never own a Sonic game that's not Native to SEGA...  I know I have the mega collection on PS2, but, that's a crappy emulation job.  I've grown up with SEGA and Sony systems... We had an NES, but...  I was so little... I only have one memory of it.
