Smashchu2 has written a lot, but said nothing; let’s examine.
This first wall of text is insanely epic, I have highlighted Smashchu2's comments in the evil red and black font which I feel is fitting for the way his comments are evil and have a tendancy to be very tangential in regards to the derailment of what was a celebratory occasion for the PS3's sales. I will break it up to make it easier to read, and comment on.
Now, the problem is, and what mny people will forget, is that price cuts do not attract new customers, but ones who have been interested in the system for a while. Price drops only break the barrier of the system's price. As the price lowers, more people can get the system, or find the new price is right for a purchase.
You are constantly contradicting yourself here. Price drops= new buyers interest! Amazing concept isn’t it?
The problem is, it only gets on-the-fence buyers. The buyers who are buying for a price drop are those who had some interest in the system. If you had no interest in it before, you wont buy it because it's a lower price. Nintendo's strategy is what will create long growth and that is to let the software sell the hardware.
"is what will create" ?? This was a thread about Sony, why so defensive about the wii? Some of my responses may seem a bot childish, but fitting in such a situation.
Before Wii Fit, there were a lot of buyers who did not want the Wii. When it came out, people had to have one. They had a new reason for buying one. Sony's strategy with the PS1 and the PS2 was to offer enough software so that it could attract numerous buyers. Sony sidestepped what most console manufacturers did before (make software that will push the hardware)and let the third parties do the work.
I won’t even go and list all of the amazing 1st party games Sony has created this gen. What they have done is responded to Microsofts pre-emptive entry into the console race with the PS3 which initially did not have a lot of great software since it couldn't, (because their hand was forced to launch the PS3 tech before they wanted to because of MS) but Sony’s strategy is to always create software that pushes the hardware and hardware that pushes developers to create better software- instead of reintroducing a last gen tech with amazing marketing. They have the highest quality games this generation (statistically speaking) and now with the PS3 slim and apparantly the marketing to push the console, they might just bea able to show people like yourself that the PS3 games have been there for quite some time now, and have been absolutely incredible.
Basically, their strategy was to bombard consumers rather then with strategic attacks. One reason why the PS3 is struggling is that Sony's strategy was very easy to replicate. What??
Microsoft and Nintendo can both easily do it, but Nintendo added a spin and uses the old strategic attack hardware as well. Consoles always sold based on hardware, even the PS line. New users, who did not care about the PS3, will not come now because of a price cut. fixed.
Would you say that new interest will not be created in the eyes of the consumers when they see a $300 bluray player/gaming console?
Sony is not getting into the casual market. They have no idea why Nintendo is successful.
They know why. And you’re right they won’t “get into” the casual market. They want to continue to have that dreaded 3rd party development that you wii supporters hate so much.
Even if they could break into it, Nintendo already has a strangle hold over the market and is much better at producing software then Sony (evient by the PS line always being supported by third parties). You don't understand the market if you think the wand will actually make expanded market users want a PS3.
Whoaaaaa!! Back up. Red flag here, did you just say that Nintendo is better at producing software BECAUSE Sony has third party developer support??
I am flabbergasted!
Where to begin here…… 3rd party developers Do develop for the wii alot, maybe more than the PS3. You are probably ignoring this because the fact of the matter is, in comparison to Nintendo 1st party games, all 3rd party dev support (for the wii) is for the most part terrible. Sovelware "mypony’z 7" garbage. Plus any reputable dev tends to choose to develop on the PS3 because when it is multiplat with the 360, those games will make much more revenue than most wii games. Plus any devoted and passionate developer typically wants to create the best most robust game they can, and to do this the hardware of the PS3 gives them the proper canvas to paint their masterpiece.
GT5 and FF13 will push hardware. The question is how much and for how long. My theory on FF games is they have been selling becuase of cinamatic quality. Both 7 and 10 were successful becuase of increasingly better graphics and cinamatics. 13 won't have the same effect as we have hit the point of "good enough."
Maybe to you things are good enough with the wii's visuals, and if I didnt own an HDTV, i might be inclined to agree with you. You have to be a little jealous you dont get to play FF13, right? I mean Boomblox is fun and wiifit can substitute jogging and all that, and games on rails have their place in my heart too, but don't you want something better? You are truly kidding yourself if you think that FFXIII will not be a huge success (sales).
People aren't buying systems due to better hardware. This is why the Wii is so successful. I won't comment on GT5 as I know little about the series
~51% of todays gaming audience choose to buy higher priced systems because of that better hardware, and it is not just the visuals.. its everything. From Blu-ray to the entire PSN XBL services. Trophies and Achievements. Voice chat and friends lists that actually work. The ability to play the BEST games this generation has to offer. Epic games that take hundreds of millions to develope because they are so much bigger and better and more beautiful than anything you can find on the wii.
This thread is about how the PS3's sales are increasing due to a new slim model, among other things. And I love that you dont realize that.
Congragulations Sony, You deserve this and much.. much more.
