Forums - General Discussion - Is Rock music dead?

I don't mean completely, but has anyone noticed lately that rock music is not in the same glory that it used to be in. Mainstream music has taken hold with rap and hip hop, and even country. But my main problem is how boring rock music is nowadays. Of course, I'm only 16, so I never lived in the eighties and ninties, but that's mostly the kind of music I listen to. I just wanted to see if anyone else has observed this or seen this happening. Who's getting tired of all this alternative, dumbed down music that's come out recently? There are some underground bands that are good, and some more popular modern day bands that are great. Does anybody think that intense, good rock has taken a back seat to all this alternative or even punk garbage?

Soft-rock bands tend to be doing quite well, atm, at least in the UK.

You may just notice rap and hip-hop being more dominant because of your age - mid-teens tend to listen to that type of music more than most, and that's who you're usually surrounded by.

You are right however, that hard rock, not heavy metal, seems to be missing.

When the best you have is bands like Nickelback, you have a serious problem.

In terms of mainstream music, yes, but there will never be a shortage of quality underground rock and metal acts.

In another 20 years people will say exactly the same thing about their music. The present always seems like the worst for music because your exposed to both the best and the worst and it all seems to meld into one big glob of mediocrity. People remember previous decades more fondly because only the best artists have survived the test of time and are remembered, while all the crap is promptly forgotten.

Well, there aren't anymore bands like The Beatles, Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I haven't heard any recent song that can compare with what those beasts did.

So, it's not dead, it's just that before it was much much better

Rock music is not dead; it simply is not as popular as hip-hop or pop on mainstream stations. For fans of hard rock, Alice in Chains is soon to release a new album; its first album in fourteen years. This decade also saw the formation of Audioslave and Velvet Revolver; two bands that, although they are no longer active, released a few good albums. There are new bands such as the Silversun Pickups who are carrying the torch, so to speak. The rock genre is alive and doing well.

impossible question to answer without knowing the following:

your definition of Rock music
your definition of Dead

LOL

Mainstream music sucks, get that inside your head. If you want to listen to real music, you have to go find it.

The genres I listen to are:
-Underground Hip-Hop
-Post Hardcore [rock]
-Indie Rock

Basically anything indie is mostly good.
