Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why PS3 and 360 drop dead for the same reasons

From Eurogamer :"....it instantly became apparent that many of the Internet truths surrounding the console failures were anything but, and that the heat dissipation issues that plagued every revision of the Xbox 360 up until the most recent Jasper version were hardly exclusive to the Microsoft console. Slowly but surely, just like its competitor, the issue of PlayStation 3 reliability is being brought into question.

While the scale of the so-called YLOD issue is difficult to judge in context of the all-pervasiveness of RROD, the fact is that what I learned on my visit was pretty shocking: whether you own a Microsoft or Sony console, it seems that the act of simply using our consoles for the job they were designed can cause cumulative damage, with the very real danger that our games machines may go "pop" after the manufacturer's warranty expires..."

Wow, this man is a genius. I mean, who ever thought that using something might actually lead to it wearing over time, until it, quite shockingly I know, breaks. How dare Sony and MS not invent materials that defy the laws of physics and chemistry and not deteriorate over time and use. Quick, someone inform all the product designers out there of this nearly discovered phenomenon called 'deterioration' and its evil twin 'component failure'.

Then run back and tell him about this concept called 'fault tolerant design' and its trusty sidekick 'redundancy'. Might also want to tell him that the civil war is finished too, because I'm not sure if he keeps up with current events.

My more than 10 years old server, which is on 24/7, laughts @ these newbie machines. :)

Damn that kernel update screwed my uptime. :/

Who would agree to have a console that is as big as a PC ?
That would help.

Makes one wonder why nobody has yet to make a modification for an Xbox or PS3 that takes the internal components (motherboard, drives, PSU) and mounts them in a PC case with several fans and an aftermarket heatsink/fan for the CPU/GPU.

With the additional cooling and ventilation, either would probably be death and taxes reliable.

It exists for the 360 but I can't find the link anymore...

The only problems is that it voids your warranty...

I've actually seen that before. Lian Li makes great aluminum cases all around.

But I've yet to actually talk to anyone who's bought one. Wouldn't be that big of a deal to take a brand new Arcade and strip it. Of course paying $150 for a case to house a $200 console would be only for the serious Xbox fan who was tired of going through systems due to high use.

You'd still be better off with something like an Antec case with multiple 120mm fans for less $. Mounting the motherboard would take some case customization; tapping new holes for the mobo risers, etc. and you would still have to replace the stock heat sink with after market ones, but you'd have the coolest running Xbox for what that's worth.

Come to think of it, just mounting a larger heat sink with an integrated 120mm fan with some good thermal compound like AS5 alone would solve all heat exchange problems, only it wouldn't fit in an Xbox pizza box case. Mounts would have to be custom made too.

Probably more trouble than it's worth really.

I believe it also helps for the noise... mmh... worse the effort... I will think about it...
