Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are you a Non Completionist Gamer?

I am.  Some of you may be wondering what that is.  I only just realized this last night about myself after beating Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World with my wife.  I am a NON COMPLETIONIST GAMER.  No, it's not a gamer who tries to get 100% in games, it's a gamer who doesn't BEAT games.  I have a decent game collection,  15 or so DS games, 10-15 or so Wii games and about 10-15 360 games.  Out of ALL of those games, for THOSE systems, I have beaten Pokemon, Super Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario Wii, Zelda Twilight Princess.  Now, you may be thinking it's because they're  Nintendo games, no that's not it.  I HATE beating games because once you beat a game, it's essentially over.  Yes, a lot of games have replayability, but it isn't the same as the first playthrough, you know the story, you know the characters.

I remember the feeling quite fondly when I beat Paper Mario Wii about 7 months ago.  It was over, I got that sad feeling like when you watch the Series Finale of one of your favourite TV shows.  It'll have it's repeats, but there will never be anything new.  And I don't like this.  It's like getting dumped by someone, when all you've done is love them.  So instead of getting dumped I just avoid getting too deep into games, and go from game to game, rarely completing ones unless they REALLY stand out.  The first Tales of Symphonia stood out and I completed it and loved it, so I eventually got the second, and that feeling came back.  I'd avoid playing the game for a few days, would only play for an hour or so at a time to avoid getting infatuated with it, but alas, I couldn't help myself.

And now I'm here, writing this, sad that I've added another small notch to my game beating wall.  There aren't very many notches, but the ones that are there, will always be remembered on that sad day when I beat them. :/

Are you a non completionist like me? D:

not really.......though I do remember after beating heavenly sword and mgs4 I really wished I haven't so the storys wouldn't end in such ways, but thats about it for me. sounds like heavy rain will be your cup of tea btw.

hmm... well... I also rarely complete a game, but that's because I often got bored with the game, or stuck somewhere, or got a new game and left previous unfinished.
I have 24 PS2 games... and by far I have finished only one of them (Prince of Persia: Sands of Time). The rest is mostly 70-80% completed. Maybe one day I will find some time (and motivation) to beat all of them.

I complete most of my games. Especially if they have trophies as its more of an insentive. Usually i dont get board of my games, im specific in what i want and i know that 9/10 i will like the game enough to want to finish it.

I only complete games I really like... it also helps that a lot of PS3 games are pretty short.

The games I don't complete take more then 20 hours... unless the game is amazing then I'll finish it.

Nope, I beat the games I get.  I beat 2 games this weekend and I'll probably beat another 1-2 this week.

I don't necessarily get 100% in the games I have, but I do beat them... eventually.  If they kind of suck like Tales of Symphonia 2, it may take me 5 months to beat them but I still eventually do.

If and when I get really stuck in a game, I cannot tear myself away from it. I play day and night, miss school and social gatherings and lead a solitary life until the game in question is beat.

And when I do beat it, I feel that lonely feeling you were talking about. But I will do anything to get back to my normal life as soon as possible, so I RUSH through the game instead of, as you, avoid it to drag it out as long as possible. Also, I get addicted to it, can't stop thinking about it. Don't want to stop playing.

Luckily, this doesn't happen very often. It's been a long time since it happened, actually. The closest I've gotten this year is Super Mario Galaxy and Wii Sports Resort. Both of which I do not own.

I guess I should also add that this happens with games, books, manga and TV-series. I'm addicted to a good story, and to good gameplay.

Haha, it's like your my opposite.  I avoid the games, you dive in 25/7 :P  In the end, we both get sad. :P  I do get addicted after a certain point in a games story, for the ones I do beat.  The beginning is where I usually faulter, and try not to get that emotional attachment to the game.  Once that attachment is there, then I'm thinking/wanting/playing it non stop until I beat it.  With ToS2, I got to that stage this weekend, and put in easily 14 hours over the last 2 days to beat it.

And no WoW, ToS2 doesn't kind've suck, you do. :P
