Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Do You Think Capcom is Happy With Monster Hunter Tri Sales?

I think many are forgetting about the pay to play feature. MH is a lot about community and playing with friends. Japan never got as big into the pay online as other places like US with WOW and XBOX LIVE so moving from the free PSP playing to paid Wii playing likely prevented a lot of sales.

Ok... what are you talking about?

EA just noted that it must sell 1.1 million copies of a PS3 or X360 title to break even given that it receives $35 per sales and average costs for games are $38.5 million.

For the sake of argument, let's say Capcom has similar requirements and that Wii development is 1/3 of HD console development (as suggested by many publishers).

At 1 million already shipped, Wii has provided Capcom with $22.3 million in profit while the HD iteration at even 66% of Wii shipments (660k) would leave Capcom with $15.2 million in debt at this point.

Sure, lots of estimations and variables but even with a margin of error of a few million dollars, it's hard to imagine Capcom not being happy with Wii profits already versus what would assuredly still amount to debt along the same time frame.

1.1 million? i thought the break-even line would lay at about 500 thousand - even for the high costs like 38 million. Shit! Got a link?

I want a link too so I can make a thread about it.

I love fighting games !!! Come on challenge me !

Considering that the game cost less to make on Wii than PS3 and it's the best selling third party console game in Japan for the generation. I'd say they are pretty happy.

"According to the report, EA makes USD 35 on a USD 60 title, which means the game has to sell 1.1 million units just to break even."

The $38.5 million figure breaks down as follows. ~$13 million in actual development + ~$26 million in advertising.

Monster Hunter - 0.28mln LTD in japan,
Monster Hunter G - 0.23mln LTD in japan,
Monster Hunter 2 - 0.63mln LTD in japan,

Monster Hunter G Wii Remake - 0.24mln LTD in japan,
Monster Hunter 3 - 0.83mln in 4 weeks in japan, 1.2-1.5mln by the end of this year and probably 1.8-2mln LT in japan,

so yeah they are definitely happy since it's the best selling MH console game.

Thanx but god damn they have to pay twice as much in advertising then actually making the game they I believe that entirely EA poor marketing strategy at fault there.

Rule of thumb for most publishers is dev cost and marketing costs are equal though the bigger publishers will spend twice as much on marketing. EA, Activision, Capcom, Nintenod, Sony, MS, etc....they fall into the latter category.

The realy important number about MH3 is how many people are paying the subs.

I didn't know MHG Wii outsold the PS2 version LTD. I guess that should have been the first sign that MH3 would be colossal.
