Forums - Sales Discussion - "Which Next-Gen system has sold the most 3rd party units?"

Just a quick lookup I did: Quick answer: Xbox 360 by around 140,000 units. Here's the top list for the mixed sales of all games above 125,000 units (according to VGCharts). This list isn't including those below the 125k mark, but I did add up the sales to give the 360 leading numbers.

360 Call of Duty 2 837000 360 Madden 06 456500 Wii Rayman & Raving Rabbids 375250 360 NFS:MW 342000 Wii Red Steel 335500 PS3 Madden 07 335250 Wii Madden 07 315250 Wii Super Money Ball 267250 Wii Call of Duty 3 251250 Wii Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 207250 360 Condemned 206750 PS3 NFS: Carbon 185500 Wii Trauma Center 172000 360 Dead or Alive 4 170750 360 Quake 4 170250 PS3 FNR3 168250 PS3 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 160000 360 NBA Live 06 157750 360 NBA 2k6 152000 360 Tiger Woods 2k6 142500 360 Gun 138250 Wii DBZ 2 134500 PS3 NBA '07 129250 Wii NFS: Carbon 128250
Total sales for ALL units (atleast those I could count), including those not in the +125k list: Xbox 360 ~ 2,950,000 Units Wii ~ 2,810,500 Units PS3 ~ 1,689,750 Units Therefore: The 360 sells the most 3rd party units. It also will continue selling including launch due to GRAW and Oblivion in March. The Wii and PS3 maintain very similar 3rd party sales attach ratios (somewhere near 1.5 or so). The 360 has about double that attach ratio for 3rd party sales (although it sold almost half the hardware as the Wii, and about the same as the PS3) So we can deduce: The 360 is the king (thus far) of 3rd party sales. The Wii is doing good The PS3 is doing good (but bad considering # of h/w units sold). Also, its worthy to note the Wii has about 5 more 3rd party titles out at this point (give or take). The PS3 has the least 3rd party games at this point. (about 7 less than Wii, 4 less than 360)

Is this a fair comparison when you are comparing a console that has a year up on the other two? Maybe I am not reading this close enough - was this taken into account?

I'm a bit confused by the criteria your using. Is there a reason why 360 games like Lost Planet, Major League Baseball, Tom Clancy Rainbow 6, Fight Night round 3, NBA 2k7, Tiger Woods, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Saints row or any of the other major sellers aren't on there? the 360's Madden has 1.5 million sales also

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

If you are going to do a comparison like this you should at least include Japan's figures as they are just as easily count as NA per this site. Using both would put 360 in last place if I am not mistaken. Maybe that is why you chose not to...

And why are the Wii numbers in bold? I am confused by your odd choice of data. You don't include titles under 125k, but then you add those numbers up anyway, to "give the 360 leading numbers"? I'm sure the 360 sells the most 3rd party titles...but this list doesn't make sense to me.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

1. I'm only including launch data and 4 months into each conoles lifespan - obviously if you compared the last 4 months of the 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii, the 360 would beat out both the PS3 and Wii combined. If you look at the titles I compared, it's obvious it's launch titles vs. launch titles. 2. I am American, so I'm just talking American data. Taking Japaneese data would ruin the 360 vs. PS3 vs. Wii comparison because the 360 is a non-factor, Im just talking about a very equal competitive market...Also, most 3rd party software published this far into the cycles are western-centric titles. Why are the Wii numbers in bold? Why would it matter? I don't think there's really need to question that. The 125k+ was just a quick list of top titles....Same reason VGCharts.org only has the top 200 titles per month/week. I wanted to be fair with the launch data, as if I compared just the top 125k titles, it'd escew the data against the PS3 (as there are quite a few PS3 titles that haven't reached that yet) If I included J-data, it might not change data much, as 3rd party sales (in terms of tier ratios) are very low for the Wii in Japan. However, if you want that, I can do that.
