Forums - Website Topics - hey people, get on the IM!

So, you were saying people in the IM would only discuss gaming?

I've been in there for 40 minutes and gaming only just got brought up because we were discussing how Pokemon mated.

When no one's on the IM, I usually spam the hell out of it.

It's a lot of fun.

Talking about hoe Pokemon mated? Dude, that's more goofy than talking about games themselves!

It stemmed from a discussion on hentai. But of course, that's a normal topic, unlike gaming.

Spend $ to go on an IM service and talk to strangers about videogames?
No thanks, I more of a 'go on MSN and talk to mates I know about normal stuff kinda guy'

Why own money if not to spend it?

And if you only want to talk to your friends, why join a forum? And are you implying that video games aren't normal?

The subjects in the IM aren't always about gaming, anyway.

Sense of acomplishement maybe?

I am here to discuss sales data, I like business, that's why I'm here.

And chatting about gaming in an IM service is certainly not normal.

Could you give three examples of 'normal' topics?

Most people I know on services like MSN talk about things like sport, movies, music, going out (organising things), dates, girls, food, work, business, gossip, TV.

Yes. Well there's no difference between talking about films, TV, sport, music and talking about games. It's all a bit nerdy.

Talking about work is usually quite sad as most jobs on this planet are pointless/immoral/dull.

Gossip is for weird people that don't have a life/are massively insecure/jealous and so need to talk about other people.

Business: again, depends on what it is. It's certainly not any more normal than talking about games.

You're kidding right? Talking about videogames is way more nerdy than talking about upcoming movies and music. Usually when people talk about music/movies they just have a good chat about it, the avergae videogame discussion breaks out into an argument over what games better, review scores are used and people start worshipping companies! Local affairs would actually be the most common thing people talk about WW.

Talking about work and careers is just part of everyday life. When you see a mate from time to time you'l ask him 'how's work going these days' for example.

Business, well, it's a bit iffy. I wouldn't say it's normal, but It's still quite common and mainstreamingly accepted (unlike talking about games).

Anyway, that's enough with this, and this applies to Killergran aswell - You can talk about whatever you want, yes, but talking about games constantly is not for me. I know from seeing various pictures of people on this site that this mostly doesn't apply to them, but every person I know personally that talks about games alot is a social outcast.

To each, his own, in conclusion, I won't be buying IM ;)

You sound like those awful people who've never touched a game and dismiss everyone who has as a person with no life and no friends who plays 20 hours a day and never leaves the house.

What is music? Listening to a sound. What is a movie? Watching a video and listening to a sound. What is a game? Controlling something, watching a video, and listening to the sound. Why, when you add control, does it suddenly become nerdy?

It's easy to have a casual chat about gaming, it happens in IM all the time. And I don't think you can save yourself from nerd status. You're on a video game forum (a sales forum no less), you own many games, and you enjoy talking about them. To a "normal" person, you would be a nerd. There's nothing wrong with that, especially if that is the definition of "nerd" you are using. I am a nerd, many of my friends are nerds, many of my friends are not nerds, and do not think badly of me for being a nerd.

I would hate to have no real friends to talk about gaming with. It's not all we talk about, of course, but then it's not all we talk about in VGC IM either. It is usually gaming related, seeing as this is a gaming site, but it can be different. Movies, food, politics, even sex on occasion. And the IM is rarely moderated, unless you are being a prick and spamming the N word or something.

How can I even argue against that? I can't debate against any of your points but in general, and I don't know why, gaming enthusiasts are a more goofy bunch of people than the norm. I don't know why it is, there is no theory or logic behind it, they just are. I think all this hate for game extremists roots back to my highschool years (a year or two ago), I swear, I was in the top class....surrounded by a bunch of videogame fanatics. I had to sit beside them in class where they made stupid noises and talked about PS vs Xbox all day, Lord, they even based their IT coursework on videogames at times. This is where I really thought, 'Get a life you dweebs'. Also, talking about games in front of girls = you're not getting with them.

So yea, too many videogames are bad, and I don't like videogame addicts or people who just talk about them all day long (I bet, or I know there is a select few in this site). I'm clearly not tarring everybody on this site as a geek because obviously I'm on this site right now, and I like it (mainly the sales side). I'm just saying, I find videgames get discussed too much on places like this and that some people take them too far and seriously, arguing over consoles for example, I don't understand why people do this. Do people argue over McDonalds and Burger King constantly, or U2 and Kasabian? No.

So, in second conclusion, I get tarred with enough game talk to go in the IM and get tarred by more. I like games and I play them maybe half an hour a day on average (or if there's a new release then like 5 hours on a Sunday, lol), but I still think there are too many obsessed people.

Enjoy games people, they are fun and relaxing and good for playing with friends, but make sure to balance them with other things lol, don't become like the people in my highschool class!

Dude, there's nerdy behaviour about films, music and all of those things. People DO argue about bands, whether they've sold out; Some people cry when bands split up. Like anything, it's all about moderation. The IM is just another way of chatting to people on this site ithout nhaving to add loads of MSN names. It's all good though and you have put some of your points across well in this thread. Shame about the other thread where we had interactions.

Check out my game about moles ^

I have a few suggestions to help IM become more popular

1: Make it free. Yes its cheap now but its still a hurdle.

2: Make everyone join the lobby by default so people are instantly in a room where they can talk to people.

Also if its too expensive to make it free just put an ad on the page to help subsidise it if possible or something.

I still go on from time to time and its depressing as most of the time theres only 2 other people on at the most.

EDIT A redesign so it looks like VGC 2.0 wouldn't be amiss either. Consistency is always a good thing.
