Forums - Gaming Discussion - Would I like Fallout 3?

F3 gained loads of game of the year awards and I was quite interested in it, but I just hated Oblivion and had other games to play. However, though I do have plenty of other games to play, I have the Game of the Year edition going for £30, which is just a steal with all the DLC, so should I buy it?

It has been said to be Oblivion in a wastleland and that has put me off it, as has the dreary landscape. Also, I have read some stuff about there being horror in it, which I would hate. I do like RPGs like Mass Effect, so would I like it?

Not sure. The landscape is drab and the atmosphere grim. There is horror - well, sort of, more a case of lots of gore and enemies that fulfill certain horror staples. However, you are armed, and unlike survival horror you can make sure you are well armed before entering any location.

I think a better way of getting a feel for its vibe is to understand it blends a classic, 50s movie look and feel for surviving in the aftermath of nuclear war with a more modern, very Mad Max (minus the cars) feel with brutal tribes, bloody death and murder being in major supply.

Obviously the core engine and feel is very like Oblivion, the main difference I felt was that in Fallout 3 you pick what to level up in normal RPG fashion vs automatically leveling up based on what you're doing - as was the case in Oblivion. Another big difference is VATS. With that you really move to a more pure RPG approach were combat is stat based and automatic vs you moving/shooting in real time. In fact VATS may be the main difference now that I think about it.

To me they felt like very different games because of setting, plot, approach, etc. - however I can see that others might find them to be essentially the same game with different textures.

One thing I'd note too, although you can have a TPS view if you prefer, it's as poor as Oblivion. Fallout 3 for me plays and looks best as a FPS in terms of core movement.

So I'd read up on VATS and the leveling system, as they make Fallout 3 much more of an RPG than Oblivion in my eyes, maybe take in a gameplay video or two to judge how you like the feel of the game, then go from there.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I loved oblivion & hated fallout 3

that means you'll love fallout 3 as you hated oblivion

GOTY Edition is already out? I guess I'll finally buy it then.

I've finished the game, though I was rushing. Probably didn't get the most out of it. It does have a lot of similarities to Oblivion, like the way you interact with NPC's and the way the game progresses.

It plays nothing like Oblivion though. Oblivion had pretty crappy combat, but F3's VATS is quite deep and satisfying. And let anything but the setting put you off. It's one of the best game worlds ever created.

The short version:

While it may look like Oblivion in a wasteland, Fallout 3 is a significantly better game.

Yeah if you like an action rpg. If you didn't like Oblivion you might like this.

Fall in to the oblivious.

Okay, I'll look at some more reviews and details of the VATS system. I did like ME, so I do like action RPGs

I think you would like it, its much different from Mass Effect its darker, less linear and more down to earth than Bioware game.

I think Fallout 3 is much superior to Oblivion as a game , especially in terms of story (which is more important to me then exploring). I suggest waiting for GOTY edition (comes out in October pre order it for 29 quid with all DLC) or if you want it now get it from amazon and then buy the DLC.

I love Fallout 3 ! But yeah it's hard to say if you would like it.
