It would appear that with the new console revision that Sony has bestowed on the world (releasing 1st September) is moving from the 65nm Cell down to 45nm. This is good news as this means the console will be costing Sony a lot less money than it would be to produce 65nm technology and also this accounts for the reduction in power and size (since there will be a reduced need for cooling within the console)

How much is "a lot"?

The cost savings won't be that much, because 45nm wafer costs are about a third higher than 65nm. Needing less infrastructure like fans and heatsinks due to the reduced power consumption is the main cost saver here.

not really the 160g and 80g fats had 45nm aswell although the slims cell chip is an advanced edition of the older 45nm that were in the fats
