Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Can the 360 retake the lead from the Wii?

It is possble the 360 will outsell the Wii during Christmas in the US.

It all depends on the Wii Fit release. If the game gets an 07 release in the states it will sell systems nearly 1:1 with the game as it is for another audience as Wii Sports.

If not, then the 360 has a chance of outselling the Wii in the US. Worldwide not. The Wii would have to sell terribly in Japan to get outsold by the 360.

Can the 360 overtake the Wi WW before the end of the year? Possibly.

It will all come down to how many Wii's Nintendo can ship out durring the holiday period. If hey can only double the numbers they have now then yes, the 360 will pass the Wii befor 2008. But if Nintendo has been stock pilling them like most on this board think and can realease an extra 2 to 3 million this holiday on top of what they already produce, then the answer would be no chance of the 360 passing the Wii WW.

First of all I wouldn't use Amazon as a metric. They are a popular online retailer that is true, and their pricing strategy is superior. However I guarantee if you take the time you will find other online retailers do and will have the item on stock. I have seen it happen a number of times. I have gotten the mails from Amazon enough times to know the drill. Ordering ahead is no guarantee either. They accept the order then send you a sorry letter a week later. Eventually after a month you get fed up withdraw the order, and go elsewhere.

The reality is that Amazon readily runs out of items. I have the same thing happen a few times a year. They never get in enough to match the demand. Like I said they cannot even match pre-orders made get this months in advance. Meanwhile you can go to another retailer and find the item in question. Perhaps for a few bucks more, but its well worth not having to wait three months to get something you ordered in advance.

The same holds true for any brick and mortar retailers. I know I must be some kind of mutant if I want something, and a store is out of it. I go to another store and see what they have to offer. Obviously the stores with the greater foot traffic are prone to stock depletion. Why do people find it hard to understand that all you have to do is take a short drive and you can find these things. Hell popular stores run out of things that are not the Wii. I always knew Maxwell House, and hot dog buns were supply constrained.

I have only seen the Wii on shelves dozens of times this year in multiple locations. Others have said the exact same thing. By the way some of those units have been on the shelves gasp for days. Oh yeah the machine is supply constrained. Give me a break. Seriously how many months has it been since we heard a legitimate sob story. You can find a Wii if you want it.

While it is hard to imagine that the 360 could end up beating the Wii in the coming year or 2 I think its still a small possibility. I think the wii offers a different experience than traditional consoles and thats part of the reason for its success. However, that does not mean that when the HD consoles come down in price people will not want them.

Is it possible that nintendo wii could sell a massive amount of consoles with wiifit? I think the anserw is yes but it is also likely that alot of these consoles are being bought for only a couple games. Wii Sports etc. People that have little interest in playing lots of games. I think a more likely victory of the 360 will be in software sales. (bundled games in my opinion are a expensive to move the console and shouldn't reflect in charts.) Ahem wii sports

Will the 360 over take the Wii long story short I highly doubt it. May it over take the Wii temporarily its about a 50/50 chance but in the long run I think Nintendo's got this round in the bag.

Right now the temporary boost in 360 hardware sales can be almost soully contributed to Halo3. I expect the sales to continue to do terrifically through the Christmas season. However Nintendo has Mario:Galaxy coming out in November along with a cheaper price tag. When parents rush out to buy their kids console this Christmas console price and Mario will become major factors.

Japan is another reason I doubt Microsoft will over take Nintendo. The software lineup in Japan is way to good and will increase Nintendo's sales by a sizable portion this holiday season. So with Mario who I bet will ship about a million hardware units and about two million copies by January I think Nintendo has a very good chance of hanging on to their lead.

In the long run meaning largely next year. The delay of SmashBros till February is pretty disturbing however it gives Nintendo a very strong start to the new year one which neither Sony or Microsoft can challenge. Then when Sony and MS get GTA Nintendo launches MarioKart.

Perhaps the biggest thing working in Nintendo's favor is what Nintendo hasn't shown us. At this years E3 and the following trade shows including Nintendo's own, only a small handfull of games have been announced (MarioKart,WiiFit) and a handfull of Wiiware titles. What am I getting at, Nintendo has what about 60-internal first and second party studios globally. All those studios and nothing to show, Nintendo is holding back big time and I can guarantee that they are preparing for a major fight in 2008.

With only two or so new games confirmed from Nintendo you have a good 20- or so unconfirmed titles (Not rumoured titles) titles that Nintendo is no doubt developing but hasn't told us about. I mean this is the least amount of games I think I've ever seen Nintendo announce in a new year. Obviously the beginning of an ambitious software drive. While we all wait for Nintendo's upcomming landslide of first party games third parties have time where they dominate which helps Nintendo tremendously and so far seems to be enough for the Wii to maintain slight dominance.

So long story short the race might be tight but come next spring and summer Nintendo will unleash hell and Microsoft will be left in the dust. Of course Fable , BanjoThreeie and HaloWars might help Microsoft survive the onslaught with a decent market share but not in any way will they retake the market!

Seriously, what are you even talking about!? Retake what lead, the worldwide lead? If so, why are you using american numbers?

The 360 has outsould the Wii worldwide 2 weeks, and 2 weeks only: Halo week by 11k; and last week by about 5k (once Japan's numbers are in). It's possible it'll happen again next week, but I doubt it.

Plus the Wii has a 600k lead already, and in 3 weeks Galaxy releases in Japan.

Kruze pretty much encapsulates the pointlessness of this thread.  The 360 only barely passed the Wii for a few weeks following the release of its biggest game.  Even if the 360 could sell 5k more a week it'll take longer than 15 months to overtake the Wii's lead.  It's becoming safer and safer to say the 360 will never overtake the Wii again (even if some people's crazy theories that the Wii will only last 3 years, Halo 3 will sell 16.5 million,  and Wii Fit will sell to no one who doesn't already own a Wii for Wii Sports are accurate).

Oh and I just noticed, other than Mario Galaxy nothing coming to the Wii is better than Army of Two or VF5?!!! Come on, it's fine if you're a fanboy but best not to let that get in the way of market analysis. It'll help to keep you from having crazy thoughts like this.

Brawl coming out or not isn't going to affect the Wii sales these holidays, they will sell out regardless.. meaning it will be the same either way.. if it doesn't i'll gladly eat crow

How would you know? Since Brawl is not coming out over the holidays, we'll never see how it would have affected sales.
