Kwaad, all developers would prefer to program without being forced to use threads. And they would especially prefer to not program on asymmetric architectures as the Cell is... Seriously, Sony took something which is already hard and made it even harder to work with on the PS3.

For that and other reasons (e.g. bad tools and APIs, too much memory overhead from PS3's OS), don't be surprised to continue seeing developers watering down PS3 ports until the PS3 builds a decent userbase (if ever).

Yup, more or less what I said... you just said it a bit more technical.

No it isn't... You were talking about PC developers, my statement was for all developers. Give a developer a fast enough single core processor and (s)he'll do anything with it. If threading is needed, it can be used anyway. But if you're forced to use multithreading, you're automatically losing in computing power and ease of programming. The only reason multicore exists is because it's harder and harder for hardware makers to make fast cores.

Bad developer than. I alway programm thread heavy, it makes things so much easier if you do it right :o)

As I said, single core doesn't mean single thread. Whenever threads are desired you can still use them. But with multicore, there are some algorithms you just can't run as efficiently as if you had a single faster core, barring a big theoretical advancement in computer science. Me too.

Look, it's Mr Newells opinion, if you google around you'll see that there are a lot of other developers who see the possibilities of the Cell and scientists who think ( & say ) that the Cell is a CPU-revolution and the x86 architecture will come to an end once programmers are used to the Cell architecture and the Cell is more optimized.

I'm not saying that Mr Newell is wrong and others are right, but currently there are a lot of different opinions out there, where the most of them are in the favor of the Cell.

So this topic is rather useless, it just reflects the current opinion of Mr Newell which can change completely every few months.

I'll take this guys word over any forum poster on here in terms of developing a game. Obviously people hate on him because he make not like what you like but at least he can actually talk about it in great detail. MikeG talks about him not wanting innovation just beause he talks down the PS3 but hey all I care about is that Valve is giving us gamers 5 games for $60 which by the way is also coming to the PS3 and he assure us will kick butt on there as well.

Again going back to "innovation" what the hell has the PS3 done that you would call innovative for this generation? Blue-ray? well there is HD-dvd that is just as good. Motion Sensing controls? Wii does it better. Online?Xbox live just plains kills it. Games? Only game to score over 90% overral is a 1 year port in oblivion. I am baised as I just don't like depending on "potential" as I am a sports fan and have seen so much money wasted on "potential" with players. This is what the PS3 is basically doing and in the end it won't matter one bit. When the games can stand out against the 360 the system well sell but until then just have to roll with the punches.

@Kwaad

No its nowhere near bias, the BEST experience IS ON THE PS3. Motion sensing, great online, music, game downloads, blu-ray playback, pictures etc.. The wii cant do most of the things the ps3 can do, and the 360 doesnt have half of the feateres the ps3 has.(By experience Im NO TALKING ABOUT ACTual games just which one is more enjoyable with just one game..)

Lmao. Wow Leo you really are sounding crazier with every post!

PS360 ftw!

Currently playing..........

Gears of War 2, GTA IV Lost and Damned, Little Big Planet (Yes I said I had no interest but my girl wanted to try it and we did and now Im hooked )

I think he is going through an acute attack of trollitis extremis

@ LingLing

@MikeB: could you please provide some sources of devs that say PS3 is easy to develop for?

You can find public quotes here, here and here.

IMO you''ll soon start to see ever more advanced PS3 game engines. Check out the Ratchet and Clank demo, play the full game to determine the advancements Insomniac has made so soon after their release of Resistance: Fall of man.

If anyone here has trouble programming the Cell, check out the website of a buddy to ask questions: PS3coderz.com

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

There is one issue, just a small one, they have to sell the idea to the market, make them believe that the cost will be smaller compared to the benefits...

This is not only about the Performance and Optimization, is about the market share and user base, whats the point of making optimized software just for the cell if the market doesn't want to leave behind the x86 architecture... (Because all the money they had invested on it, hardware and software)
