“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Played this today -- both the sit down pod and the controller station with the Benz SLS.

Although the menu UI had other icons (GT Mode, show room, etc), you couldn't actually access any of them. Going to arcade mode took me straight to the Subaru rally car so this was strictly demo material.

I did a normal race as well as a race where all I did was crash the Subaru. Damage model looked the same as Gamescom build. Doors and hood popping open and falling off if you abuse the car enough, but surprisingly going full speed into a barrier the first time produced no discernible damage. Damage started creeping in after multiple crashes.

The 458 Italia wasn't playable but I did see it in the screensaver mode on a big monitor and it looked damn good. I tried the SLS build and crashed the car repeatedly with incremental damage texture results (scratches and scrapes on fender and hood) but no model deformation that I could see and no doors and hood popping. I could be wrong and this car could have full damage but I crashed the hell out of it for a few minutes and all I saw were textures for scratches. The SLS did have a cockpit view. Makes me wonder whether or not it'll be like this for the full game where there will be 1000 cockpits and some cars (race cars) will have 3D damage while the remainder will just have texture damage with no deformation.

That said, it felt like pretty early code to me and I'm surprised PD showed it in its current state. In 3rd person view, the rear tires of the WRX disappear into a weird motion blur glitch when you're driving. Also, cubemaps on the hood were extremely blocky and low res. I don't remember if that's what they look like in GT5P but now I'm curious to go find out when I'm back.

It was really about the only game I saw today as I was stuck in a hotel room the rest of the day.

Hmmm...that's interesting. I wonder if he was actually referring to the (lack of) damage in Forza 3? If he thinks GT5 has no damage in comparison, it must be pretty much zero lol.

Polyphony Digital Welcomes Press, Interviews Begin

September 25th, 2009 by Jordan

Since Kazunori Yamauchi announced the Japanese release date on Thursday, the news has been met with a wide range of emotions, from elation, relief, to anger. The drama forming around Gran Turismo 5 is boiling over like never before, and all eyes will be on Yamauchi’s next interviews. Fortunately, we won’t have to wait long, as Polyphony Digital has welcomed several groups of journalists over to their studios for tours, taking questions along the way. One site, GameSpot, is taking a bold move by actually inviting their readers to recommendquestions for Yamauchi-san – you can take advantage of the opportunity by leaving a note in their comments right here.

GameSpot’s interview is expected to be published on Saturday (September 26), though other interviews will not be revealed until Monday. For now, here’s some of the latest pictures from inside Polyphony’s headquarters (don’t miss the Xbox 360 and a copy of NFS Pro Street) which are already making their way on to the web via GamesBlog. Keep checking back right here for analysis and evaluation of each interview as soon as they hit the wire. As always, thanks to everyone who let me know about these foreign interviews.

TGS 09: Gran Turismo 5 Hands-on Damage Report

Sony shows us some cars, and we beat the hell out of them.

September 26, 2009 - It's been a fairly big Tokyo Game Show for Gran Turismo 5. At the Sony conference centering on Japan, it was announced that the Land of the Rising Sun would see the game in March, that there would be 20 locations with a total of 70 track variations, that there'd be more than 950 cars in the game including hybrids and electrics, and so much more. Plus, the show floor has a set of racing wheels showcasing the red Ferrari, Subaru rally car, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Even better? You can damage those rides.

We put the hurt on this Subaru.

Now, Gran Turismo 5's a work in progress so a Sony rep let me know that the damage I was seeing in the game was still in development and will change by the game's release. Still, that didn't stop me from slamming on the brakes and turning into t-bone collisions to see just what Polyphony had put under the hood.

Now, for starters, there's going to be deformation damage -- scratches and stuff -- for all normal cars, but race cars are going to take hits hard in a way that will cause doors and side panels to tear completely off.

To put these differences to the test, I took the Subaru racer out on the track and began wildly smashing into walls. At first, it looked like nothing was happening until, finally, the passenger door popped open as I sped around the raceway. I was a bit underwhelmed and went to jerk the car into the left wall, but as I made the move, another ride flew up and clipped my front end.

When the spinning was over, my bumper was hanging on by a thread.

Eventually, I'd get into a few more fender benders and have my rear bumper hanging from one side as well. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get either bumper to completely breakaway. Still, the car looked all sorts of screwed up.

When I climbed into the Ferrari and the Benz, I got to see how the other half lived. I slammed the rides into tire piles, rammed other cars, and grinded along guardrails; the only damage I could see were superficial cracks and scuffs on the fenders, sides, and hoods -- you know, like people had scratched away the paint.

I'm going to smash you!

Now, even though the Subaru looked like death and the Benz/Ferrari looked scratched up, all three drove like crap after the accidents. Whereas I could fly around in the rides beforehand, now I felt tension in the wheel when I'd be driving down a straightaway and cornering was tougher than ever.

I'll admit it: I had a hell of time wrecking these cars today. Slamming into orange plastic and watching it get kicked up in the air is fun, the smoke from a spinout is refreshing, and I'll be damned if I'm not going to knock off every bumper I can when Gran Turismo 5 is released.
