Forums - Sales Discussion - God Of War III To Be A Sales Monster?

Uncharted 2 >>>>>>>>>> God of War 3.

Thats all I have to say, anyone who says that God of War will outsell Uncharted is dissing Nathan Drake and Naughty Dog!

Some of the issues with PS2 sales are that games were heavily pirated. Core gamers tend to pirate significantly more than casual gamers, and without a meaningful online component to much of the ps2s lineup there was a huge incentive to do so.

Even now, how many years after GOW was released..? I can still find up to 3000 downloads of GOW going on right now, with some sites tracking over 100,000 downloads _each_ and that's only the sites that track downloads.

Too far to tell out to see. It's not as well of established franchise as say Halo, Mario, Pokemon, GTA, GT, or Zelda where you can pretty much already gear how huge the hype already is. God of War is going to have to work for it.

But I could imagine that it has a chance to be a big seller. Definitely not a sales monster but a big seller. Back when the first 2 released games like that weren't being released all the time. Now they really are and the "action"/hack and slash genre is really starting to take off. And unlike Madworld, it's not niche enough to really scare too many gamers away despite the obvious loads of gore.

My guesses is this game could easily sell 4-5 million lifetime if it is advertised well and seen as that big PS3 game early next year. If this doesn't go down though then it could get a little lost. I mean they need to make sure that despite all the big multi-plat games, this is the PS3 exclusive you have to get. It's easier for a company like Nintendo to do this (sometimes it works too well haha) and even MS with some of their properties but Sony has a more difficult time apparently. Let's hope they put a lot of effort into the marketing and keep that hype going steady until the launch day. If that then 4-5 million isn't out of the question. Just hope they don't get severe competition from 3rd parties.

I don't understand really how theres this assumption that people who paid $199 or less for their PS2, modded it and then downloaded God of War 1 + 2 is going to turn into a good citizen, pay $400+ all up for games and a console for the current generation. If anything it would make sense for your pirates to buy modded Xbox 360s as they know the drill and PS3s cannot easily be pirated.

I also don't understand how people think that a game which is single player focused, you know with all the explanations as to why Uncharted was played heaps because of rentals or borrowed software when this game is pretty repetitive and often people will just play it once and return it or trade it in.

Hack n' slash games are niche. That's all there is to it. Of all the great hack n' slash games last gen (DMC, NG, Onimmusha, etc.) God of War easily sold the best, but it still only managed to sell 3.21 million units.

The genre just isn't that popular.

The first Uncharrted has set a precedent for the franchise.  Unless Sony tried to make the franchise bigger than it already is via an extra heavy marketing campaign, God of War III will end up with better sales.

Sony did this with Killzone 2, but Killzone 2 was a markedly better game than the first.  Uncharted 2 won't be leagues above Uncharted. Sony screwed the pootch with the first game, imo, and as shown by their actions in the past, they're probably content to let the series continue with the popularity it already has.

I'd love to be wrong and see Sony pull out all the stops, though.  Uncharted deserves to be an Assassin's Creed caliber franchise, much moreso than Assassin's Creed, imo.

It wills ell something between God of War I and God of War II, I guess.

And hype does not sell. Check Killzone. The hype was insane and it will end around 2.5 million lifetime. Just for comparison, thats what Call of Duty 2 sold on the Xbox360.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

He is as ugly as that Cole guy from Infamous. I would say both will sell about the same.

You might have been right if God of War III didn't... er... well... have a "III" in the title.

Still, I reckon GoW III (not to be confused with GoW 3, the amazing 360 TPS franchise) will mostly only appeal to people who have played GoW I and/or II (again not to be confused with GoW 1 and 2). I never bought the PS2 games, but I did play them, and I'm reasonably inclined to get GoW III (if the missus will allow it, and probably only if it goes platinum). My prediction is that GoW III will have sales comparable to I and II. I think it is probably a game that some potential PS3 buyers are waiting for, but not a particularly substantial number. So as with most first releases of existing franchises this gen there will be a bump in HW sales on the week of release, and maybe for the week following, but that would be about it in terms of effect on HW sales.

That's such a hard call for me personally. And given the number of ">"s Squill has used I know he's taking the piss, but still it's worth thinking about.

I like sword and sandal-hack'n'slash better than modern day TPS, but I like platformers better than S&S-H&S. So Uncharted has the best and worst genre elements in this matchup. I think I will probably like them equally.

Online multiplayer isn't a major draw for me, I am far more into story-mode. With Uncharted 2 having online story mode co-op this is certainly a major mark in its favour for me.
