Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Pokemon: What's wrong and what it needs

I think to blame Pokemons lower sales on it being a 'fad' is too hasty. I mean, by that logic, was Final Fantasy a 'fad' of the 90s and is it going to die soon because every game since FFVII has been declining in sales?

The reasons for Pokemons sales being lower and lower is simple stagnation of the series (way too many Pokemon games), competition (Dragon Quest Monsters, DiGiMon, Monster Rancher, Monster Hunter, etc) and the 'sequel effect'.

Pokemon is in no threat of dying and many changes to its model could help it (Pokemon MMO, a good Pokemon Console game, etc). But Nintendo also probably doesn't want to change it at this time, when they still can sell 12+ million copies every time they make a single main game. You don't change any formula to any series when that's going on.

They should just cut back to the original 150

No.

This thread inspired me to finish Pokemon Platinum (I last turned it off after the 8th Gym badge).

I suddenly remebered why I haven't been playing it.

HMs -

Seriously, there are too many and most of them suck balls in battle. This results in you having to carry HM mule pokemon about with you just to navigate the world. I managed to fit all HMs onto 2 pokemon but still, that is 2 slots I could have been leveling a proper team with.

I only have 4 (semi-) decent Pokemon and the rest all went into my box.

So yeah, HMs suck, make them an item the human character uses, not the pokemon. That or make them all really useful in battle.

I kinda liked the HMs this time. The only one that was wasted was Defog, the others were pretty useful. Rock Slide and Strength are decent, Rock Smash was what helped me beat the first gym leader (fighting beats rock, so my geodude cleaned up), Cut i find ideal for helping catch wild pokemon, and Surf, waterfall, and fly are divine. Quite glad they got rid of Flash, though.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

A 'deep' story doesn't make a 'deep' RPG.

It's sales are doing just fine.

i wanted what the devs of pokemon said recently its their new direction.More action oriented, less turn based, whole new battling mechanics. Id love to have a chance to dodge attacks based on my skill to compliment my pokemon stats and training. That way if your last pokemon is a weak type against their oponent you arent insta screwed except by few(and often banned in tournament, items), you still, with skill, can overcome the challenge. In other words, more like the tv show, where you can make on the fly changes. Sure the movement speed could be based on the agi stat, but heck ,still is better than hoping to dodge on set percentages.

I do have a few things to say about the misconception of legendaries though. For the most part they are not actually all that much better than the normal ones. Yes you have a good bit that are broken, but those are still relatively low compared to the total number of pokemon. I do agree they seem to be adding them at an obscene rate, but the truly broken ones aren't all that bad.

Actually, they are.  If you ever check out the competitive scene for pokemon, you'll find that legends and pseudo-legends dominate the uber tier of pokemon battles.  That's not just a coincidence.  Their base stats and abilities often make them far more brutal than other pokemon and thanks to Platinum's move tutors allowing just about any pokemon to learn some devastating attacks... legends have become even stronger.

You have pokemon like Giratina (both forms), Arceus, Shaymin Skye Forme, Dark Rai, Palkia, and Dialga which are all broken admittedly. But you also have pokemon like the varios trios (Zapdos, Uxie, Raikou et al), Shaymin, Crecellia, Heatran, and every single pseudo legendary outside of Garchomp. Yes the legendaries dominate the uber tier, but there are a lot of legendaries that fall outside of that. Hell Articuno is seen as completely unusable in competitive play, and it has the same 580 (600?) stat total a lot of legendaries have. I never claimed all legendaries are balanced, but to pretend they are all broken is equally absurd. The pseudo legendaries are not broken for 90% of the cases.

All this complaining is making me sad. I'm doing my best to catch all the pokes in Pearl and then I read this.
I love Pearl. Better than Blue and Red in gameplay for sure...but those were simpler and new so everyone recalls them as the best that can't be surpassed.

Not much else to expect from a bird that can be OHKO'd by Stone Edge and has barely any type coverage.

Really though, what are you arguing here?  You admit that legendaries dominate the uber tier which was my point (as well as part of the OU tier) and then turn around to say that "to pretend they are all broken is equally absurd" which is something I never did.  I'm not really quite sure what your point is.
